This invention relates to fastening devices [of the type wherein two edges of a fabric,
- successively interengaged or disengaged by operation of a slider.
One object of the invention is to provide means for properly locating the fastening elements of the two separable edges in o'sition to be interengaged by operation 0 the slider.
Another object is to provide means for locating the coupling elements of the opposite edges in such relation that only a very slight movement of the slider'will be necessary to begin the operation of interengaging the coupling elements.
Another objectis toprovide a device-of the stated character embodying simplicity and low manufacturing cost.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.

4 Referring to the drawings which disclose one practical embodiment of the invention, reference characters 1 and 2 represent respectively two completely separable stringers which may be secured to the oppositeoedges of separable parts, such as the front edges of a sweater or coat, etc., the stringers being usually provided with beads 3 and 4 constituting their opposed edges and provided with rows of coupling elements such as those indicated at 5 and 6 adapted to be interengaged and disengaged by operation of a slider 7, which slider is generally equipped with a substantially triangular cam 8 cooperating with diverging side channels 9 and 10 of the slider to interengage and disengage the coupling elements 5 and 6.
In stringers ofthe completely separable type, it is obvious that some means must be provided for so locating the opposed edges or beads 3 and 4 that when the slider is op-' erated the coupling elements 5 and 6 will be started to'interengage each other at the proper point with respect to the bottom of" the garment, so that the lower edges of the garment will be in alignment or disposed in any other relative position desired when the ele ments 5 and 6 are coupled together. For accomplishing this result, the bead 4 of the stringer 2 is provided with aneye-ll preferably of sheet metal bent to'form, and including arms 12 clampedrto the bead 4 and.
also having a pair of oppositely disposed side members 13 curved inward at their free ends substantially as illustrated in Fig. 3 and forming an opening. The opposite bead 3 is adapted to be inserted into the eye 11 and to extend beyond the bottom of the eye in substantial parallelism with the opposite head 4. During insertion of the bead 3 into the eye 11, the slider 7 is brought to.a lowered position as indicated in Fig. 2, whereby the bottom edge'of the slider rests upon the uppermost one of the arms 12 of the eye 11, which in effectforms a stop for holding the slider in 'position .and to prevent the same from dropping off of the stringer 2. In this lowered position of the slider 7, the channel 9 forms a guide-way for directing the bead portion 3 of the stringer 1 down into and through the eye 11 which is preferably loose fitting around the head 3. A stop 14: is carried by the bead 3 and is adapted to engage the upper edge of the eye 11 so as to bring the firstcoupling element 5 of stringer 1 in position immediately beneath the triangular cam 8 and at a point to be engaged between the two lowermost coupling elements 4' at"- tached to the bead 4 as will'be understood upon a consideration of Fig. 2. By thus disposing the lower element 5 of the stringer 1 and the two lowermost elements 4' of the stringer 2 in close proximity to each other immediately beneath the cam 8, it is only necessary to move the slider upward a very short stop of the distance to begin the operation of successive- 1y interengaging the cou ling elements 5 and 6 of the two stringers. 0, when the shder 7 has been brought to its lowest position, that is, against the upper arm 12 which acts as a eye 11, the stringer 1 may be readily removed from the eye and withdrawn dent that j through the channel 9 of the slider, thus completely separating the two stringers. In order to facilitate insertion of the bead 3 into and through the eye 11, that portion of the bead 3 below the stop 14 is preferably stiflened. This may be accomplished by treating theabove named portion of the bead with a solution of collodium, or the said portion may be reinforced by a metal ferrule, such as indicated at 15. Preferably a similar ferrule 16 is secured for symmetry of appear- .ance to the portion of the head 4 extending below the eye 11.
With the foregoing description it is evivarious alterations and modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it is therefore not intended to limit the invention except as defined in the appended claim.

The combination with two completely separable stringers of flexible material having bead portions provided upon their edges with coupling elements adapted to be interengaged and disengaged by said head below said eye being reinforced the bead portion of the other stringer'being provided with a ferrule adapt: ed'to enter and pass through said eye, a stop above said last named ferrule adapted to engage said eye whereby to position the coupling elements of said other stringer in position to be interengaged with the coupling elements of the eye carrying stringer when said slider is operated, said ferrules being disposed substantially in parallelism and depth below ments are interengaged.
