Patented Nov. 3, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOWARD P. ANDERSON; OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD STOKER COMPANY, INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE LOCOMOTIVE TENDER Application filed November 18, 1930. Serial No. 496,899.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotive tender construction particularly adapted to receive stoker mechanism.
It is an object of this invention to provlde in a locomotive tender an L-shaped water tight compartment arranged to house a stoker fuel trough and a stoker engine at the rear of the trough and to ermit access to the stoker en ine through t e tender sidewall.
Other 0 jects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from t e following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal vertical 5 section of the tender and stoker compartment with the stoker trough and engine diagrammatically shown therein Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the tender is represented generally at 10, and com rises the frame 11 and the tank 12 provide with the fuel compartment 13, the water compartment 14 and the stoker compartment 15. The
tank used for purposes of describing the invention is shown as c lindrical but the invention is equally applicable to tanks of other shapes and designs. r
The tank 12 comprises the base plate 16 to which sidewalls 17 and 18 are secured in a' as suitable manner as by riveting. The fuel and water compartments are separated by the side slope s eets 19 and 20 and the rear slope sheet 21.
The stoker compartment 15 formed in the to water compartment 14 beneath the fuel compartment 13 is L-shaped and extends in a horizontal plane, with the long portion 22 of the L extending longitudinally of the tender, on its vertical central plane and opening 15 at the front end of the tender, and the short portion 23 of the L projecting laterally from the end of the long portion 22 op osite its open end and extending transverse y of the sidewall 17 of the tender and opening there- 50 through through the aperture 23a. i
The stoker compartment 15 is closed at its rearward end by the upstanding plate member 24 secured at its upper and its lower end to the rear slope sheet 21 and the tank base plate 16 respectively. The sidewalls of the longitudinally extending portion 22 of the compartment 15 are preferably formed by the extensions 25 and 26 of the side slope sheets 19 and 20, and the floor is formed by the plate 27 secured along its opposite edges to the extensions 25 and 26 and supported along its center from the tank base plate 16 by the the support member 28. The roof of the por tion 22 of the compartment 15 is definedby the floor 29 of the fuel compartment 13 and the rear slope sheet 21. v
The sidewall 25 of the portion 22 of the compartment 15- is apertured at its rearward end to permit communication with the laterally projecting portion 23 of the compartment 15. The portion 23 of thelcompartment 15 is closed at its rearward end by the upstanding plate member 24 and at its top, bottom and front by the walls 30, 31 and 32 respectively. The side of the portion 23 of the compartment 15 which projects through the tank sidewall 17 is provided with a hinged closure 33.
The floor 29 of the fuel compartment is carried from the sidewalls 25 and 26 in. a suitable manner and is provided with a longitudinal central opening 34. Slide plates 35 are mounted in the opening 34 and may be moved from covering position to permit gravity feeding of fuel.
A fuel trough 36 is mounted in the stoker compartment 15 beneath the floor 29 of the fuel compartment and is supported from the stoker compartment floor 27 by the plate-like supporting members 37. A screw 38 in the trough 36 receives fuel from the fuel com-' partment, advances it against a crusher 39 mounted in the forward end of the trough reducing it to a proper size for firing, from Where the fuel is delivered by suitable conveying means to a firebox.
The drive'for the screw 38 includes an engine or motor 40 mounted in the rearward portion of the stoker compartment 15. Motion is transmitted to the screw 38 from the engine 40 through reduction gearing 41 enclosed in the gear casing 42. An oil drain 43 leads from" the bed of the engine through a passage 44 connectingi corresponding enings 45 and 46 in the sto er compartment oor 27 and the tank base plate 16 respectively. Steam for operating the engine 40 is supplied from the locomotive through the main steam line 47, and a control valve 48 regulates the flow of steam to the engine through the live steam pipes 49 or-50 for operating the stoker forward or for reversing. The control valve 48 is provided with a stem 51' leading forwardly to a point convenient for the fireman for operating'the valve in forward, neutral or reverse positions. When the engine is being operated by live steam passing through the pipe 49, t e exhaust from the engine passes through the pipe 50, and vice versa when the engine .is being operated by live steam passing through the pipe 50 then the exhaust from the engine passes through the pipe 49. The pipe 52 constitutes an. exhaust to the atmosphere commonto the pipes 49 and 50. An exhaust drip pipe is shown at 53. The main steam line 47 is provided with the drain valve 54 and the discharge pipe 55.
The stoker drive mechanism is easily and conveniently accessible for purposes of 'inspection, repair or replacement from the side of the tender through the laterally projecting portion 23 of the compartment 15. Locating the stoker engine at the rear of the conveyor screw instead of at the front of the tender or on the locomotive eliminates the v necessity ofra drive shaft to the rear of the screw and the consequent loss of power. My improved tender construction permits of a compact, rugged, sim 1e and easily accessible stoker and stoker drive mechanism.
