,The floor 22 of the fuel compartment i2 is provided with a central longitudinal opening 23 communicating with the' trough l5 and through which fuel is supplied to the trough by gravity. Plates 25 are slidably mounted in the opening 23, and may be moved from covering position to permit entry of the fuel into the trough as the supply becomes depleted.

bowl 26 is received in a spherical portion of thevertically split coupling member. 28 carried by I the tubular section 28 which leads forwardly to deliver fuel to the locomotive firebox in any suitable manner.
Suitable mechanism is employed for crushing and for copveying =fuel, including a screw 30 mounted in the trough l5 and extending longitudinally forward intothe bowl 26 and a crushing abutment 3| at the forward end of the trough and arched over the screw 30 for engaging the fuel to crush it to a proper size for firing.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 1,
2 and 3, the trough l5 opens rearwardly into av 35, the top wall 36 and the side wall 31. The
upper plate ll of the tender frame It forms the bottom wall of the compartment 32 and the re-' movable cover 38 in the tender sidewall 33 'forms the other sidewall thereof. The rear wall 33 of the compartment 32 s provided with an opening 39 communicating with a sleeve whichex tends longitudinally of the tender along the extended axis of the screw 30 opening rearwardly in the upri ht rear wall ll of the tender. A detachable cover 42 forms a closuie for the rearward opening of the sleeve .40. The plates constituting the walls forming the compartment 32- may be secured in any suitable manner to a framework consisting ofthe upright angle bars 32a and the horizontal angle bars 32b.
The compartment 32 houses the stoker driving mechanism making it easily and conveniently accessible for purposes of inspection, repair and replacement through the opening in the side of the tender by removing the cover 38. The driving mechanism comprises a motor 43 mounted in the compartment 32 at one side of the openings to the trough l5 and the sleeve 40 and a gear casing 44 removably mounted in the compartment 32 normally forming a closure for the opening to the trough I5. The motor 43 operates the drive shaft 45 which, transmits motion to the shaft 45 coupled to the drive shaft 45 by the coupling member 41. The gear 48 carried by the shaft 46 engages the gear 49 mounted on the shaft 50 transmitting motion thereto, which inturn operates the screw 30. This arrangement permits withdrawal of the screw an through the com partment 32 and the sleeve40 without necessitating' uncoupling of the locomotive and tender. It may be done conveniently by removing the bolts 5|, removing the coupling 41, drawing the shaft 45 apart from the shaft 46 permitting sufficient clearance for withdrawing the gear casing 44. f
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate a modified arrangement in which a motor and gear housing compartment 52 extending transversely of the tender is located at the rear thereof. This compartment 52 forms a recess in the water compartment at one of the rear corners, enabling the drive mechanism to be mounted outside or exteriorly of the water compartment and shielding the drive mechanism fromthe water therein. The opening through which access to the interior of the comartment 52 is gainedis in the rear upright wall of the tender and is closed by the removable cover 53. A longitudinally extending sleeve 54 communicates at its forward end with an opening in the rearward end of the trough l5 and at its rearward end with an opening in the front wall of the compartment 52. A screw conveyor 55 is mounted in the trough l5 and extends rearwardly into the sleeve 54 for a few turns. The flights of the screw 55 in the sleeve 54 have a larger diameter than the remaining flights and slightly less than the diameter of the sleeve to fit snugly therein. When clogging or jamming occurs it is usual to reverse the screw 55 for about a half a turn to relieve it, and some fuel will be carried into the sleeve 54. L This fuelwill be swept back into the trough by the enlarged flights in the sleeve when the screw is again rotated to advance fuel. The shaft 55 of the screw conveyor 55 extends rearwardly into the compartment 52 and is supported by the bearing 51 which forms a closure for the opening between the sleeve 54 and the compartment 52.
The screw conveyor 55 is operated by a motor 58 through gearing 59, in the same manner in which the screw 30 in the preferred form is driven. The screw 55 may readily and conveniently be withdrawn through the rear of the tender by removing the cover 53, removing the coupling member 60, detaching the gear housing from the floor of the compartment 52 and withdrawing the screw 55 rearwardly through the sleeve 54 and the compartment 52. We claim:
1. In combination in a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, said sections arranged to receive a stoker trough having a conveyor therein, and a water tight compartment formed in said water section immediately rearward of said trough extending transversely thereof intermediate the ends of the tender and opening through an upright sidewall I of the tender,- said compartment housing drive mechanism for: said trough conveyor.
2. In combination in a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, said sections arranged to receive a stoker trough having a conveyor screw therein, a water tight compartment formed in said water section rearward of said trough extending transversely thereof and opening through a wall of the tender, said compartment housing drive mechanism for said trough conveyor screw, and a sleeve extending longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said compartment, through which compartment and sleeve the screw may be removed from the rearward end of the tender.

In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, said sections arranged to receive a stoker conveyor, and a water tight compartment for housing stoker'drive mechanism formed in said body portion adjacent, and providing access'to, the rearward end of said stoker conveyor, said compartment extending transversely of one side of said tender and opening through an upright sidewall thereof.
. 5. In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, said sections arranged to receive a 7 openinginto s'aid compartment and at the other opening through the rear wall of the tender.

In'combination with a locomotive tender having a base, abody portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, said sections arranged to receive a stoker trough having a screw conveyor therein, a water tight compartment formed in said water section at the rearward end of said trough, said trough at its rearward end opening into said compartment, 9. gear casing detachably mounted in said compartment to form a closure between the rear end of said trough and said compartment, gearing in said casing associated with said screw, a stoker engine removably mounted in said compartment and having a driving connection with said gearing and said compartment opening'through an upright sidewall of the tender to provide access to and permit removal of said casing, gearing and engine.

In combination with a locomotive tender 75 a water tight compartment formed in said water section at the rearward end of said trough, said trough at its rearward end opening into said compartment, a gear casing detachably mounted to form a closurebetween the rear end v of said trough and said compartment, gearing in said casing associated with said screw, a stoker engine removably mounted in said compartment and having a driving connection with said gearing said compartment opening through an ex- 16 terior wall of the tender to provide access to and permit removal of said casing;.gearing and engine, and a. sleeve extending longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said compartment and at the other opening through the rear wall of the tender whereby upon removing the gear casing said screw may be removed from the rearward'end of said tender through said sleeve.

In combination with a locomotive tender 2!; having a base, a body portion with partition plates separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections and arranged to form the bottom portion of said fuel section, a water tight compartment at the rear of said trough and having an opening through an upright sidewall of said tender, said trough at its rearward end opening into said compartment, and a detachable gear casing normallyforming a closure for 5 the opening between the ter section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections and arranged to form the bottom of said fuel section and being spaced above said base and arranged therewith to provide communicating water space underneath said plates and beneath said trough, a water tight compartment for housing stoker drive mechanism formed,
in said water section at the rear of said fuel trough, said compartment opening through an upright sidewall of the tender and said trough at its rearward end opening into said compartment, and a gear casing removably mounted in said compartment normally forming a closure between said compartment and said trough.

In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating thefuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections and arranged to form the bottom portion of said fuel section, a conveyor screw in said trough, a water tight compartment for housing stoker drive mechanism formed at the rearward end of the tender and having an opening through a sidewall thereof, a sleeve extending between the rearward end of said trough and said coinpartment, said sleeve being disposed longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said trough and at the other opening into said compartment, said screw extending rearwardly into said sleeve. and that portion of its vanes within said sleeve havin a diameter substantially the same as the internal .diameter of the sleeve, a gear casing inclosing gearing mounted in said compartment, a stoker engine in said compartment having a driving connection with said gearing, and a shaft extending into said sleeve connecting said screw with said gearing. In combination with a locomotive lender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections arranged to form the bottom portion of said fuel section, a conveyor screw in said trough, a'compartment separated from the water section formed at the rear end of the tender, stoker drive mechanism within said compartment, a sleeve extending between said compartment and the rearward end of saidtrough, said sleeve being disposed longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said trough and at the other opening into said compartment, and a drive connection extending within said sleeve connecting said screw with said drive mechanism.

In combinationwith a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections arranged to form the bottom portion of said fuel section, a conveyor screw in said trough,,a compartment separated from the water section formed at the rear end of the tender, stoker drive mechanismwithin said compartment, a sleeve extending between said compartment and the rearward end of said trough, said sleeve being disposed longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said trough and at the other opening into said compartment, a drive connection extending within said sleeve connecting said screw with said drive mechanism, said screw extending rearwardly into said sleeve and the screw vanes within the sleeve. being of larger diameter than the screw vanes within said trough.
14.*In combination with a locomotive tender having a baseua body portion with partition walls posed longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said trough and at the other opening into said compartment, and a.drive connection extending within said sleeve connecting said screw with said drive mechanism, said screw extending rearwardly into said sleeve and thescrew vanes within the sleeve being of larger diameter than the screw vanes within said trough, the diameter of the vanes within the sleeve being slightly less than the internal diameter of the sleeve to form a close fit providing a seal against backward movement of the fuel during its normal forward movement.

In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections arranged to form the bottom portion of said fuel section, a conveyor screw in said trough, a com-' partment separated from the water section formed at the rear end of the tender, stoker drive mechanism within said compartment, a sleeve extending between said compartment and the rearward end of said trough, said sleeve being disposed longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening into said trough and at the other opening into said compartment, a drive shaft extending within said sleeve connecting said screw with said drive mechanism, and a bearing member for said drive shaft detachably mounted to form a closure for the opening between said sleeve and said compartment.

The combination in a locomotive tender having a base frame and fuel and water compartments, of a stoker conveyor mounted in said tender at the front end portion thereof to receive fuel from said fuel compartment, stoker drive mechanism mounted above said frame at the rear of the tender shielded from the water in said water compartment, and a drive shaft operated by said drive mechanism extending through said water compartment, said drive shaft and stoker conveyor having adjacent portions which are operatively connected ,in end to end relation.

The combination in a locomotive tender having a base, frame and fuel and water compartments, of a stoker conveyor screw mounted in said tender at the front end portion thereof to receive fuel from said fuel compartment, stoker drive mechanism mounted above said frame at the rear of the tender shielded from the water in said water compartment, a drive shaft operated by said drive mechanism extending through said water compartment, said drive shaft and conveyor screw having adjacent portions which are operatively connected in end to end relation, and a sleeve surrounding that portion of said drive shaft within the water compartment.

In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition plates separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections and arranged to form the bottom of said fuel section and being spaced above said base and arranged therewith to provide communicating water space underneath said plates and beneath said trough, a water tight compartment for housing stoker drive mechanism formed in said water section at the rear of said fuel trough, said com partment opening through a wall of the tender and said trough at its rearward end opening into said compartment, and a gear casing removably mounted in said compartment normally forming a closure between said compartment and said trough.

In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough formed in said sections and arranged to form the bottom portion of said fuel section, a conveyor screw in said trough, and a sleeve rearward of said trough disposed longitudinally 'of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening through the rear wall of the tender and at the other being arranged to communicate with the rear end of the trough, whereby said screw may be removed rearwardly of the tender through the sleeve.
20. In combination with a locomotive tender having a base, a body portion with partition walls separating the fuel section from the water section thereof, a stoker trough mounted on the tender to receive fuel from said fuel section, a conveyor screw in said trough, and a water tight sleeve in said water sectionrearward of said trough disposed longitudinally of the tender on the extended axis of said screw and at one end opening through the rear wall of the tender and at the other being arranged to communicate with the rear end of said trough, whereby said screw may be removed rearwardly of the tender through the sleeve.

A locomotive tender comprising a base, a body portion with partition plates forming fuel and water sections, a stoker trough mounted to receive fuel from said fuel section, and a water tight sleeve in said water section rearward of said trough disposed longitudinally of the tender and at one end opening into said trough and at the other through an upright wall at the rear of the tender.

A locomotive tender comprising a base, a body portion with partition plates forming fuel and water sections, a stoker trough mounted to receive fuel from said fuel section, a water tight sleeve in said water section rearward of said trough disposed longitudinally of the tender and at one end opening into said trough and at the other through an upright wall at the rear of the tender and a screw conveyor extending within said trough and said sleeve.

In a locomotive tender, a base, a body portion above said base with partition walls forming fuel and water sections, a stoker trough mounted to receive fuel from said fuel section, a water tight sleeve in said water section rearward of said trough disposed longitudinally of the tender and at one end opening into said trough and at the other through an upright wall at the rear of the tender, a screw conveyor extending within said trough and said sleeve, and means on the tender for driving said screw.

In a locomotive tender, a base, a body portion above said base with partition walls forming fuel and water sections, a stoker trough mounted to receive fuel from said fuel section, a water tight sleeve in said water section rearward of said trough disposed longitudinally of the tender and at one end opening into said trough and at the other through an upright wall at the rear of the tender, a screw conveyor extending within said trough and said sleeve, and means on the tender above said base and rearward of said upright wall for driving said screw.

In a locomotive tender having a water-bottom underframe, a stoker trough forming the top wall of a portion of. the water chamber, framewark for a stoker engine compartment extending laterally from said trough, and elements forming the floor for said compartment and the top wall of a water chamber beneath said compartment.

In a locomotive tender, an underframe, a stoker trough located over the central portion Yet of the underframe, and a stoker engine compartment extending from the rear oi said trough to the side of the tender, there being an opening in the side of the tender for access through one end or said compartment, and there being tank walls at the opposite end, and at the front, rear, top,
and bottom of said compartment.
27. In a locomotive tender underirame, a horizontal web forming the bottom oi the tank, a center sill, aside sill, transverse transoms extending upwardly from said web, and a horizontal top web between said sills and transoms forming the bottom wall of a stoker m w compartment.

In a water-bottom underirame for a locomotive tender, center sills, side sills, transverse transoms between said sills, a horizontal web between the lower portions oi said sills and transoms, a horizontal top web between the upper portions of said sills and transoms, said parts forming a liquid compartment, and said top web also rorming the floor of a stoker engine compartment.

In a locomotive tender, a water-bottom underframe having center sills, side sills, transverse transoms between said sills, a horizontal mounted on said underi'rame, and superstructure plates secured to said sills, trough and framework whereby a liquid storage chamber is formed in part by the sides of said trough and compartment and extending over and beneath the latter.

In a locomotive tender, an underframe including a stoker trough and an imperiorate bottom web forming the tank bottom, superstruc-' ture including a tank and a coal hopper, an open box-like framework extending laterally from the rear end of said trough and having elements for mounting a stoker engine, and plates secured to said =1 v ework and forming walls for said tank.
32. In a locomotive tender, an underframe including a stoker trough, and an integral stoker engine mounting structure extending laterally from the rear end thereof, said underirame having upright elements supporting said structure.

In a locomotive tender, an underfrarne including a vertical side sill and a center sill, a 20 conveyor trough, a irame structure extending rearwardly and transversely therefrom and supported on said sills and opening through an upright wall of the tender conveyor driving mechanism mounted in said frame structure, and a 25 liquid storage compartment substantially surrounding said mechanism.
34. In a locomotive tender, an underirame including a stoker trough and an integral stoker engine mounting structure extending from the rear end thereof.
