20 Claims.
This invention relates to a novel locomotive tender construction peculiarly adapted to receive stoker mechanism.
It is an object of the invention to provide in a locomotive tender a forwardly and upwardly tilted stoker trough formed as an integral unit with the tender frame, and more particularly to have a portion of the trough formed within the frame itself.
It is a further object of the invention to pro' vide increased coal space in a Stoker equipped locomotive tender by forming a portion of the stoker trough within the frame thereby increasing the depth of the fuel bin.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an alcove formed in the tender frame at the rear of the trough to receive drive mechanism whereby the stoker fuel conveying mech- SEG ' I 6 and connecting ribsV |.'I.

To the above and other ends the invention consists in the parts and arrangement of parts and in their relation and association one with the other or in combination as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. `1 is a central longitudinal vertical section through a portion of a locomotive tender with a portion ofthe stoker mechanism and the drive mechanism as applied thereon;

Referring to the drawings, the locomotive tender is indicated generally by the numeral I0 and is provided with the main underframe structure Il, the deck I2, therfuel bin I3 and the water space I4. The tendermain underframe structure I I comprises the base plate I5, the top plate The invention is shown and described in its preferred form as applied to a tender having a water bottom frame, it will be obvious, however, that the invention is not so limited and is equally applicable to tenders having other than water bottom frames.
The fuel bin and water space are `separated from eachother by the side slope sheets I8 and I9, the rear slope sheet and the fuel trough 2|. VThe trough 2|, which may take any suitable cross sectional form. preferably Vshaped,
comprises the sidewalls 22, 23, provided with the flanges 24, respectively and the rear wall 26 provided with the flange 21. ' Ihe flanges 24, 25 and 27 are attached to the side slope sheets IS and I9 and the rear slope sheet 20 respectively by suitable water-tight fastening means.
The top of the trough 2| is closed by slide plates 28 which may be moved from covering position as the supply of fuel becomes depleted permitting fuel to drop into the trough by gravity.
The trough 2| is formed as an integral unit with the tender underframe structure Il and inclines upwardly from its rearward to its forward end. At its rearward end, the bottom of the trough merges into the base plate I5 of the frame, and at its forward end the bottom of the trough is slightly above the top plate I6 of the frame. That portion of the trough 2| that extends below the top plate I6 forms virtually a depression therein, the sides of the depressed portion of the plate I6 forming the sidewalls of the trough and the rearward portion of the depression forming the rear wall of the trough. It has been customary to mount the trough above the tender frame and generally in a horizontal plane. The innovation proposed by my invention permits lowering of the trough thereby increasing the depth of the coal bin and its capacity, requiring fewer refueling stops on long runs. The lowering of the trough permits the practice of further economy in the use of a shorter trough and conveyor screw than is possible in prior constructions in fuel bins of the same capacity.
A screw conveyor 29 having an extended shaft 23a is mounted in the trough 2|, and conveys fuel forwardly against the crusher 30, arched over the forward end of the screw 29, where it is reduced to a suitable size for firing. Suitable conveying mechanism carries the fuel forwardly from the trough to a rebox where it is delivered by suitable and well known means. The extended shaft 29a is mounted in a bearing 3| formed in the rear wall of the trough 2|.
A water tight compartment or alcove 32 is Y formed in the tender underframe structure II rearward of the trough 2| and comprises an irregular front wall 33, the rear wall 34, sidewalls 35 and 36, and the top wall 31 which is formed by a portion of the tender frame top plate i6. The bottom of the alcove 32 is open to permit access to the alcove from beneath the tender. Housed in the alcove 32 is the small high speed engine 38'and Stoker drive mechanism. Motion is rnimitted to the screw shaft 29a from the drive shaft 39, which in turn is operated through suitable enclosed gearing 40 by the engine 38. The screw shaft 29a and the drive shaft 39 are joined by the coupling member 4l. By this construction the stoker conveying mechanism is operated directly from its rearward end, eliminating the 4use of flexible or universal driving connections between the engine and conveyor and the consequent loss in efciency. VThe engine and conveyor drive mechanism are easily and conveniently accessible for purposes of inspection, repair and replacement.
I claim:
1. A locomotive tender frame comprising a horizontal main under-frame plate member, and a rearwardly and downwardly extending depression in said plate member forming a stoker trough.
2. A locomotive tender frame comprising a horizontal plate member, a rearwardly and downwardly extending depression in said plate along the vertical longitudinal center line thereof, the walls of said depression continuing upwardly and forwardly above the sur-face of said plate Vto form va stoker trough with said depression. 3. A locomotive tender frame comprising a base plate, a top plate, ribs connecting said base plate and said V.top plate and a stoker trough formed with said tender frame, ya portion only thereof being included between said top plate and said base plate, and ribs connecting said trough and said base plate.
4. A locomotive tender frame comprising a base plate, a top plate, ribs connecting said base plate and saidtop plate, a rearwardly and downwardly ,extending depression in said top plate along the vertical longitudinal center line thereof, the walls of said depression continuing upwardly and forwardly above said top .plate to form a stoker trough with said depression.
5. In a locomotive tender, a main underframe structure and a downwardly .opening alcove formed therewith entirely included within the confines of said main underframe, for receiving stoker drive mechanism.
6. A locomotive tender frame comprising a base plate, a top plate, ribs connecting said base plate and said top plate, and an alcove formed `within said frame and entirely included between said base plate and said top plate and opening through said base plate.
7. In a locomotive tender, the combination of a main underframe structure, a stoker trough formed therewith, and an alcove formed within the confines of said-main underframe rearwardly of said trough and opening downwardly and exteriorly of the tender.

A locomotive tender main under-frame comprising a base plate, a top-Y plate, ribs connecting Y said base plate and said top plate, va depression in said top plate forming a stoker trough, and an alcove formed in said frame rearward of said trough and entirely included between said top plate and said base plate, said alcove opening downwardly through said base plate.

12. The combination in a locomotive tender, of a main'under-,frame structure, a stoker trough formed therewith, at least a portion of said trough extending below .the top of said main underirame structure, and a stoker drive mechanism housing rearward -of said trough depending and l supportedfrom said main under-frame structure.
13. In a locomotive tender the combination of a main under-frame structure Vincluding a base plate, a top plate and ribs ,connecting said base plate and said top plate, a stoker trough formed with rsaid main under-frame, anV alcove formed in Y said main :under-framerearward of said trough, entirely included between said base plate and said anism housing mounted in said alcove.

In a. locomotive tender, the combination of a fuel bin, an open mouth trough beneath and communicating with said bin, said trough sloping downwardly from front to rear, a substantially horizontal platform at the front of said tender forming a shovelling deck, and a plurality of slidable plates forming a floor portion for said bin and a closure for the open mouth of said stoker trough, said plates sloping downwardly and rearwardly from said substantially horizontal platform at approximately the same inclination as said stoker trough.
