Description

Oct. 20, 1931. .1. J. VLCEK NONCHATTERING VALVE GRINDER STEM Filed April 1. 1950 Invenlor M 1/ 771 zfV/f A llomey Patented Oct. 20, 1931 JOHN J. VLCEK, onWILsoN, KANSAS NONOHATTER-ING VALVE GRINDER STEM Application filed April 1,
This invention relates to valve grinder stems, and is more particularly adapted for stems used in grinding poppet valves on internal combustion engines.
An object of the invention is to provide a resilient grinder stem for hand or electric valve grinders, that will grind the valves smooth with the saving of one-half of the grinding compound that is necessary on solid, rigid valve grinder stems.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a valve grinding neck which is strong, compact and durable, thoroughly reliable for its intended purpose, very simple in its method of assembly, adaptable for installation on all hand or electric grinders, and that is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and use.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views 2- Figure 1 indicates a side elevation of the valve grinder stem in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but taken at right angles thereto, and
Fig. is a horizontal section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, 5 indicates generally the upper section of the valve grinder stem in accordance with the present invention.
This section 5 is cylindrical in cross section and is formed on its upper end with a reduced threaded neck 6 which is adaptable to threadably engage with the rotating mech- 1930. Serial No. 440,824.
an-ism of the valve grinder not shown in the section. Adjacent the lower end, the upper section is formed with apair of diametrically alined slots 10,11 through which project the lateral wings 12, 13 on the rectangular plate 14: that is anchored through an opening 15 across the lower section 9.
This opening 15 is adjacent the inner end thereof, and registers with the slots 10, 11 so that the wings will project through the slots. In the edge of each wing 12, 13, is a U-shaped recess 16, 17, which receives and anchors an 4 annular ring 18, that is circumposed about the periphery of the lower portion of sec- I tron 5.
WVhen the wings 12, 13 engage the lower end of the slots 10, 11, the blocks limit theoutward movement of the lower section 9 of the stem.
The lower section 9 is cylindrical in cross section, and is movable within the socket 7, the extent of the slots 10, 11, because the wings 12, 13 also limit the upward movement of the section 9 when they bear against the upper ends of the slots 10, 11.
The lower end of section 9 is bifurcated and formed with a pair of spaced ears 19, 20 supported in openings in the ears is a pin 21 that pivotally connects the grinding head 22 between the ears 19, 20.
In the application of the invention, the grinding head 22 has depending lugs 23, 24 thereon that engages in openings for a diametric groove on the upper face of the poppet valves, whereby the turning of the stem rotates the head and drops the valve to its seat.
The plate 14 not only provides a limit stop.
for the upward and downward movement of section 9, but also prevents twisting of one section with respect to the other. The ring 18 holds the plate 14 in the opening 15 so that the same will not become detached.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merel for the purpose of exemplification, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure, or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the claim, or the requirements of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is In a valve grinding tool, a stem composed of a pair of telescoping sections, the outer section having a pair of oppositely arranged longitudinally extending slots therein, a plate passing through the inner section and having its ends extending through the slots, said ends of the plate having notches therein, a ring encircling the outer section and engaging the notches and a spring in the outer section and bearing against the inner end of the other section.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN J. VLCEK.
