T. BALLIET & J. S. DEMAREST. STUMP-EXTRACTOR.
Patented Oct.3.18 76 No.18Z,791.

N- PEIERS, PHOTO LITHOGRA TILMANN BALLIET AND JOHN S.
FIGE.
DEMAREST, OF NEVADA, OHIO.
I lliilPROVEMENT IN STUMP-EXTRACTORS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 182,791., dated October 3, 1876; application filed September 2, 1876.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that we, T.BALLIET and J. S. DEMAREST, of Nevada, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump Extractors; and 'we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de-- scription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved stump-extractor, and Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof, showing it in operation.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in stump-extractors and it consists of mechanism for rendering the parts susceptible of transportation without having to be taken apart, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
1n the annexed drawing, Arefers to abeam having one end supported upon a post or block, B, and between uprights I) 11 upon the said block or post, and its opposite end resting upon a lifting-screw, O, working in a block, D, and having a handle, 0, for its manipulation. Suspended from, and supported upon the beam A, is a link, 6, having a hook,f, chain, or other means for obtaining a purchase upon the stump to be extracted.
The above-enumerated elements constitute the principal features of a stump-extractor patented by us.
The novelty of our invention consists of the following described parts used in connection with'the above:
E E are runners upon which the beam-supporting blocks B D are secured, or they may be made in one piece therewith, the object of which is to permit of the transportation of the machine about the field, or from one place to another. To the forward runners E E are at tached staples g g, or other means for hitching the animal or horse thereto, in moving the machine about the field. F F are two rods jointed to the rear runners E E, and hooked at their free ends as at h, to engage a ring. 1', depending from the beam A, to connect the said beam and runners together. The forward runners are similarly connected to said beam, as seen at F f. G is a yoke fitting over the forward end of the beam A, it being slightly niched to let the yoke therein sufficiently to prevent the beam pulling out. The ends of the wire or metal of the yoke G are provided with eyes or loopsjj, to receive the handle of the lifting-screw G to fasten the yoke in position, firmly securing that end of the beam A to the lifting-screw. The parts thus united together are in position to permit of the machine being transported without having to be taken apart.
Having thus describedour invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hooked rods F F connected to, and in combination with, the blocks B D, upon runners E E and beam A, having a ring, 850., '13,
and yoked, as at G, to the lifting-screw handle c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we hereunto affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
