Description
f UNITED i srA Es Patented Oct. 20, 1931 PATENT OFFICE EABL LEONAB BETTS, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STEEL & WIRE COMPANY, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN DISPLAY BACK Application m March 9,1931. Serial No. 521,069.
. The main obj ectof this invention is to provide a' display rack for merchandise wh ch may be easily adjusted'for the most ff ctive handling and display of the particular merchandise and which is strong and rigid even when made of light materials.
Objects pertainin to details and economies of my invention wi I definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of my improved display rack.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation showing details of the shelf mount- Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partiall in section on line 3-3 of 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary end view of one of the shelves.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a pair of standards 1 having laterally turned ends 2 at the bottom providing feet, these standards being connected at their upper ends by a top cross bar 3 integral therewith. The standards are further connected by a bottom cross bar 4 and intermediate cross bar 5 disposed adjacent the top cross bar.
Diagonally disposed crossed braces 6 are secured at their upper ends to the inner sides of the standards and at their lower ends to the cross bar 4.
I provide risers 7 which are pivoted to the cross bar 5 by means of eyes 8 on the risers, the risers having laterally turned feet 9 at their lower ends. These risers are connected by the cross bars 10. Truss rods 11 are disposed on the rear sides of the risers and welded to the riser cross bars.
I provide a plurality of U-shaped shelf supports 12 arranged with their rear arms 13 3; between the risers and the truss rods and welded thereto as indicated in Fig. 3. The front arms 14 of these shelf supports are disposed on the front sides of the risers, the shelf supporls being arranged in a forwardly inclined position providing inwardly projecting loops on the risers adapted to receive the arms 15 on the shelves 16. These arms 15 have notches 17 in their upper edges engageable with the rear arms of the shelf supports as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the shelf resting upon the forward or front arms 14 of the shelf supports. The self supports are disposed in opposed pairs and quite close together, that is, closer than the ordinary spacing of the shelves, so that the shelves may be selectively engaged therewith to suitably space the shelves as best suited to the particular article to be displayed.
The structure illustrated is a collapsible structure, the risers being supported in their extended or erected position by means of the braces 18 which are pivoted at 19 on the bottom cross bar of the risers. These braces have eyes 20 at their rear ends disposed above the bottom cross bar of the standards sothat it constitutes a stop limit-ing the downward movement of the braces.
When it is desired to collapse the structure, the braces are slid upwardly on the standards allowing the risers to collapse upon the standards. The risers are reinforced by the truss rod so that the structure is very capable of carrying heavy loads, even when formed of relatively light material.
The structure is well adapted for use in small racks such as counter racks, or larger racks designed for use as floor racks.
Having .thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a displayrack, the combination of standards and connecting cross bars therefor, inclined risers and connecting cross bars therefor, said risers having eyes at their upper ends pivotally engaged with one of the cross bars of said uprights, braces pivotally mounted on one of the cross bars of the risers and having eyes at their rear ends slidably engaged with said uprights above one of their cross bars which constitute stops limiting the downward movement of said braces upon the standards, truss rods disposed in parallel relation to said risers and secured to the rear sides of the riser cross bars, a plurality of U-shaped shelf supports disposed on said risers in forwardly inclined opposed pairs with one arm on the front side of the risers and the other between the risers and truss rods and secured. thereto, and shelves provided with arms selectively engageable with said shelf supports.
2. In a d'splay rack, the combinationof standards and connecting cross bars thereothe rear sides thereof, truss for, inclined risers and connecting cross bars therefor,-truss rods d sposedin parallelrel'a- 'tion to said risers and secured to the rear sides of the riser cross bars, a plurality of U-shaped shelf supports disposedon said risers in forwardly inclined opposed, pairs with one arm on the front side of the risers and the otherbetween the'risers and truss rods and securedthereto, and shelves proe videdwith arms selectively engageable with said shelf supports.
