I3 INVENTOR Henry Kovaci k n ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,322,077 TABLE STAND Henry Kovaeilr, New York, N.Y. (1300 Viele Ave, Bronx, N.Y. 10074) Filed Apr. 27, 1966, Ser. No. 545,717 4 Claims. (Cl. 188-111) ABSTRACT OF TIE DISCLOSURE A foldable table stand as a pair of front and rear legs and shelves, the shelves being pivoted to each set of legs and provided with means for releasably locking the legs in upright position, in the form of V-shaped vertical portions.
This invention relates to tables and it is more particularly concerned with a portable table stand which can be folded to reduce space for the purpose of shipping and storage.
An object of the invention is the provision of a table stand which is foldable and yet sturdy in its erect position.
Another object ois the provision of a foldable table stand which can be fabricated of conventional materials, such as metal bars, rods and strips.
These objects and still further objects, advantages and features of the invention will appear more fully from the following description considered together with the accompanying drawing.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention in erect position with one of the front legs set apart.
FIG. 2 is a front elevational view of the embodiment in its erect position, partly broken away.
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the embodiment in erect position.
FlG. 4 is a sectional view along the line 33 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4, but with the embodiment in its folded position.
Referring with more particularity to the drawing, the embodiment illustrated comprises, generally, a table having front legs 11, 11 and rear legs 12, 12.
Upper and lower shelves 13, 13 are of identical construction. Each of these shelves comprises a length of heavy wire or rod a portion 14 of which is bent in the shape of a U. Side arms 15, 15 extended in planes at right angles to the plane of the portion 14 and each is formed by a reverse bend 16 from which they project forwardly and downwardly.
Across the U-shaped portion 14 there are disposed front and rear cross bars 17 and 13, respectively. These cross bars are welded in place and they extend outwardly beyond the sides of the U-shaped portion 14 forming extensions 15, 19 and 26, 241 which are pivotally engaged with apertures 21, 21 and 22, 22 of the legs, respectively.
These extensions are held in pivotal engagement with the corresponding apertures by means of front cross bars 23 and rear cross bars 24 which have flanges 25 and 26, respectively, welded to the legs.
A perforated metal strip 27 as an article support shelf is also disposed across the U-shaped member 14 and secured to it by welding or by any other suitable means.
Additional reinforcing cross bars, such as the bar 28 may also be provided and welded to the U-shaped portion 14.
The arms 15, 15 extend forwardly to the front legs 11 and have outwardly extending tips 29 adapted to register with apertures 30 on the inner sides of the front legs 11.
When the tips 29 are disposed in the apertures 30, the device assumes a rigid braced structure. The tips are retained in their respective apertures by the resiliency of the arms 15. However, when the tips are removed from these apertures, the device is collapsibleto the folded position shown in FIG. 5.
I claim:
1. A foldable table stand comprising a pair of front legs and a pair of rear legs, top and bottom shelves supported by the legs, each shelf comprising a horizontal member having side extensions at the rear adapted to pivotally engage said rear legs and side extensions at the front adapted to pivotally engage the front legs, means for holding the front legs in fixed parallel relation, means for holding the rear legs in fixed parallel relation, and means for selectively preventing pivotal action of the shelf members relative to the legs when the shelves are disposed at right angles to the legs, at least one of the shelves comprising a horizontal U-shaped portion pivotally engaging the legs, said portion having reversely bent extension arms forming with the U-shaped portion on either side, a generally V-shaped portion in a plane at right angles to the plane of the Ushaped portion, the said arms having end sections adapted to be releasably attached to an adjacent leg.
2. A foldable table stand as defined by claim 3 in which the shelf members comprise horizontal article holding strips disposed across and connected to the U-shaped portion.
3. A foldable table stand as defined by claim 4 in which the article holding strips are perforated.
4. A foldable table stand as defined by claim 3 in which the legs have apertures and the end sections of the arms are adapted to engage said leg apertures and the extensions are resilient and adapted to releasably retain the end sections in said apertures.
