The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter Aset forthrand more particularly defined byclaimsl at the conclusion hereof.

The invention is exemplified in a burner( comprising a vertical pipe-section 4, the lower end ofwhich is connected vto a pipe elbow which is connected toa supply'pipe 6. This pipe 6 is provided with a control Valve 7 and is connected to receive gas j under pressure from anysuitable source. A plug 8 is thread-v ed into the upper end of pipefl, and is provided with a small j etopening 9 which is adapted to project the gas upwardly in a slightly divergent column into the atmosphere. The pipe-section't' is closed, so that the gas proj ected :trom'the jet will be undiluted with airv when it leaves the jet.

The invention exemplies a gasburner in which the gas is projected into atmosphere in a forcible stream before the gas is mixedv iwi'th air and with means for checkingthe i ,pressure sufficiently to produce efficient com- Vbustion, and an intense iiame adapted for heating purposes. The invention also 'exemplies a burner of this characterv in which the meansfor checking or retard'ing the stream consists of a small flame of gas which may be utilizedy as a pilot iiameto ignite-the gasfromf l the burner. f
In practice it has been found that a small jet of gas projected under full pressure and before air is mixed with it and with the pilotjet disposed several inches from ythe jet-plug will produce an intense somewhat concentrated flame approximately vone foot high, the yflame commencing at a point a slight distance above .the pilot-jet. The effect of the ilot jet is to heat the gas, as well as to retard Y l 1t, preparatory to combustion.
The invention is not to be understood as restrictedto the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas burner, the combination of a pipe adapted to receive gas under pressure, a jet connected to the pipe so as to receive gas therefrom before it is mixed With air and adapted to project the gas into the'atmosphere in a stream, a split clamping collar mounted slidably on the pipe, a pilot-pipe connected to the collar and arranged to project a flame across the stream to retard the latter and facilitate combustion, and means for supplying gas to the pilot-pipe, comprising a flexible pipe between and connecting the gas-pipe and the collar. Y
2. In a gas burner, the combination of a pipe adapted to receive gas under pressure, a connected to the pipe so as to receive gas therefrom before it is mixed with air and adapted to project the gas into the atmosphere in a stream, a iitting mounted slidably on the pipe and having a duct extending therethrough, a pilot pipe connected to the tting so that it communicates with one end of the duct and arranged to project a flame across the stream to retard the latter and facilitate combustion, and means for supplying gas to the pilot pipe comprising a flexible pipe connected to the fitting and extending between the other end of the duct and the gas pipe.
