In this position, also, thelatching-nose 29 of the toggle-lever 2 5 is hooked beneath the cylindrically-contoured terminal 30 of the latching-abutment 31 so thatthe mounting-plate 15 and the portion of the luggage secured thereto is drawn toward the latch-plate 32 and the portion ofthe luggage to which it is secured. It is understood that in usual practice, the mounting-plate 15 is secured to one section of a hinged trunk or similararticle, while the latch-plate 32 is secured to the face of the complementary hinged-member. I
With the parts intheir fully-latched positions, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, they are substantially proof against accidental displacement and rattling not only by the engagement of the latching-finger 28 with the latching-abutment 31 but by the engagement of the detent-pin 23 with the detent-iinger 13.
When the finger-piece 26 of the togglelever 25 is lifted to unlatch the mountingplate 15 from the latch-plate 32, the terminal 29 of the latching-finger 28 will tend to ride from under the hooked terminal 30 of the latching-abutment 31 and at the same time .the
lifting-nose 34 of the said toggle-lever will beengaged with the front face of the latchplate 32 to pry the toggle-link 22 outward so as to disengage its detent-pin 23 from the detent-notch 18 in the detent-finger 18 of the mounting-plate 15. This initial undertaking movement is illustrated in Fig. 4.
I The continued outward swinging movement of the toggle-lever 25 away from the latch-plate 32 will effect the complete disengagement of the latching-finger 28 from the latching-abutment 32 and also effect the complete disengagement of the detent-pin 23 from the dete'nt-finger 18, so that the parts may be swung into-the positions shown in Fig. 5, in which the latch-plate 32 is uncoupled from the mounting-plate 15 and one or the other of the said plates may be moved away from the other as the natural result of the opening of a trunk or similarcontainer.
In the fully-latched positions of the parts it will be noted that the coaction of the detent'pin 23 with the detent-fi'nger 18 serves to hold themiu such position so that they are not readily displaced and affords a safety feature in addition to the natural tendency of the toggle-members to remain in their closed position. Furthermore. the lifting nose 34-. of the toggle-lever being-arelativelyshort distance from the pivot-pin 24-. affords a very powerful le ers 916 when the relativelydistant finger-piece 26 is lifted to disengage the detent-pin 23 from the detent-finger 18.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that my invention may assume varied physical forms without departing from my inventive concept, and I, therefore, do not limit myself to the specific embodiment herein chosen for illustration, but only as indicated in the appended claims.
I claim: 7
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a toggle-link; of a mounting-plate to which the said toggle-link is piV-' fully-latched positions; and a toggle-lever pivotally connected between its ends to the said toggle-link for forcibly disengaging the aforesaid detent-members one from the other. 2. Ina device of the class described, the combination witha toggle-link of a mounting-plate to which the said toggle-link is pivotally connected; a detent-member carried by the said mounting-plate; a complementary det-ent-member,carried bythe said toggle-link in position to engage the first-mentioned detent-member when the parts are in their fully-latched positions; and a toggle-lever pivotally connected to the saidtoggle-link and proyided'with a lifting-nose for forcibly disengaging the aforesaid detent-members one from the other.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a sheet metal toggle-link cross-section andforming aprolongation of and fitting within the U-shaped form of the said toggle-link to which it is pivotally connected between its ends; a latching-nose carried by the said toggle-lever at its inner end; and-a latch-plate adjacent the said mountingplate and carrying a latch-abutment located in position to be engaged by the said latching-nose.
l. In a device of the'class described, the combination with a toggle-link; of a mounting-plate to which the said toggle-link is pivotally connected; a detent-finger carriedby the said mounting-plate; a detent-bar carried by the'said toggle-link in position to engage the said toggle-finger when the parts are in their fully-latched positions; and a toggle lever pivotally connected to the said togglelink and provided with a lifting-nose for forcibly disengaging the said detent-bar from the said detent-finger.
5. In a device of the'class described, the combination with a toggle-link; of a sheet metal mounting-plate to which the said toggle-link is pivotally connected; an integral detent -finger struck up from the saidsheetv metal moulitiilgplafe; didete nft-bar carrid f by the said toggle-link in position to engage r the said detent-finger when the parts are'in specification.
