IMPROVEMENT IN PESSARIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,437,..dated September 19, 1876; application filed May 24, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it. known that I, EVANS B. HARDING, of N orthampton,in the county of Hampshire. and State of Massachusetts, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pessaries; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved pessary, having attached to it the withdrawing or removing device or bars; Fig. 2, avertical section thereof; Figs. 3 and detached views; and Fig. 5, a plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a View of the withdrawing device and bars.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.

This invention relates to a certain improvement upon my patent dated November 27, 1866, No. 59,999, for an improved pessary and devicefor adjusting the same; and it consists of a frame having its hooked ends flattened and turned inwardly; of a-concavoconvex disk hung in a frame at a point below its cross-bar, and between its vertical arms or portions; and of withdrawing, 850., bars 01 devices having eyes or loops 0 0 arranged thereon, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A refers to an open frame, curved or bowed in the direction of its length, as shown at a a,an'd atits closed end outwardly, as at a rendering the said end convex upon its posterior and concave upon its anterior, by which the pessary is prevented from impingingupon and irritating the .uterus at its juncture with the vagina. frame, is a disk, B, of a concavo-convex shape, to fit in behind and between the uterus and the cul-de-sac, to keep the uterus pressed well forward. By the construction of the frame A, it being thus provided with vertical arms, as seen in the drawings, the said disk is pressed well into the cul-de-sac, the latter, in

'turn, pressing against the disk, assisting it in pressing the uterus well forward. The disk B is readily detachable, to allow the frame portion of the pessary to be used independently thereof, when desired. The hooked ends a a of the frame A are flattened, as shown in Fig. 5, to form a proper bearingsurface, and prevent liability of their passing into the urethra upon the introduction of the pessary, or tissue becoming fixed thereon.

O O are two bars conveniently shaped at one end for handling or manipulation, and provided or formed at their opposite ends with eyes or loops 0 c, disposed with reference to the said bars at any angle between a right and an obtuse angle, to admit of their ready and easy attachment to the hooked ends a a. of the frame A of the pessary in removing or withdrawing the latter. By this construction of the bars 0 G, the points of the hooked ends of the said frame can be caused to ap proximate the arms or bars of the latter more closely, isolating them from the openingin the frame. V

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The frame A, having its hooked ends a a flattened and turned inwardly, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The concavo-co-nvex disk B, hung by journals at or about its center in the frame A, between its vertical arms or portions a a and below'its crossbar a substantially as and for the purpose set-forth.

3. The pessary adjusting bars 0 0, having the loops or eyes 0 0 arranged at an angle to the line of said bars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
