The object of the invention is to provide improvements in safety razors, and comprises improvements over U. S. Patent No. 1,624,707, issued April 12, 1927 to the applicant.

The razor illustrated and described in said patent, While very satisfactory and marking an advance over the prior art, presented a construction which necessitated that the operator grip the opposite end surfaces of the blade-supporting head with the fingers of one hand, thus preventing the blade-retaining means from opening freely, while using the fingers of the other hand to rotate the handle in order to loosen the blade-retaining means and release the blade.

An object is therefore to provide the bladesupporting head with an integral extension forming a portion of the handle, so that instead of having t0 grip the ends of said head in loosening the same, and thereby affecting the otherwise free movement of said bladeretaining means, said extension is gripped by the fingers of one hand, while the fingers of the other hand grip and rotate the other portion of the handle with respect to said first portion, in order to accomplish the same result as previouslyn wWith these objects in mind the invention comprises further details of construction which are hereinafter fully brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the upper portion in fragmentary section and the blade-retaining means indicated in raised position by dot-and-dash lines 2 Fig 3 is an end elevation; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view, partly in section. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the type of'blade used.

Referring to the drawings, the improved razor holder comprises a'handle formed in two sections 1 and 2, the first section being preferably hollow for the sake of lightness in weight and provided with a knurled portion 3, while said second section is provided with a knurled surface 2a (disposed outwardly of the periphery of handle section 1 so` that the latter will remain free for rotation axial bore 4, which opens at its free end into an .enlarged recess 5, adapted to receive the adJacent end portion of said first handle section from which projects a unitary extension 6, said extension projecting through the bore 4 and terminating in a threaded end portion 7, and comprising a pin secured in any suitable manner in the end of said first handle section.

Integrally connected with the handle section 2 is a transversely extending, blade-supporting portion 8, having a recess 9 coaxial with the bore 4 upon the side opposite to said handle, to receive a flange 10 formed on the threaded end 7 but adapted to permit relative movement between said blade-supporting portion and said first handle section 1. The upper surface of the blade-supporting portion is provided with lugs 11 positioned upon the opposite sides of the threaded end 7 of the handle, and at one end is provided with a lug 12 which cooperates with lugs 13 upon a blade-securing member 14 to form a hinge, said member being provided with holes or recesses 15 to receive the free ends of the lugs 11, when-a blade 16 rests upon the supporting portion 8 and is secured in place by said member when in its operative or clamping position.

From the opposite sides of each end of said blade-supporting portion there extend integral arms 16a, while between arms on the same side there extends a rod surrounded by alternately positioned rollers 17 and intermediate spacing naashers 18, which cooperate to serve as a guard for the adjacent edge of the blade 16, the tension upon said blade to curve the same being varied by rotating the handle section 1 to cause its threaded end 7' to engage to a greater' or less degree the blade-retaining member 14.

In the operation of this improved razor, and with the retaining means in raised position, a blade is placed upon the supporting portion 8' with the lugs 11 and threaded handle end extending through the blade. The retaining means is then lowered until it is caught by said handle end. which latter is then rotated by gripping the knurled surface o when said surface 2fis gripped) and with an 2a with the fingers of one hand and rotating tea the knurled portion 3 of the handle section 1 with the fingers of the other hand, relative rotation being stopped when the desired tension is obtained upon the blade. To release said blade this procedure is reversed, it being clearly understood that the fingers of neither hand need come into contact with any portion of the blade when the latter is being either tightened or loosened.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a razor, a blade-supportingpor-- tion having a normally depending bored extension constituting a handle section, means pivoted to said portionv to secure a blade thereon and provided with a screw-threaded aperture, a second handle section in line with and rotatable `with respect to said first section. said second handle section having a part journaled in the bore of said extension and having a screw-threaded terminal normally engaged with the screw threads in said aperture, said extension adjacent its lower end having a finger-gripping portion eX- tending outwardly beyond the second handle section, whereby the latter will remain free for rotation by fingers of one hand while the firstv section is held by fingers of the other hand, and means to prevent longitudinal movement of said second handle section whereby the pivoted cap ymay be removed to and from the blades supporting portion.

2. In a razor, a blade-supporting portion having a normally depending bored extension constituting a handle section, means pivoted to said portion to secure a blade thereon and provided with a screw-threaded aperture, said pivoted means being curved transversely, said blade supporting portion being shaped in a manner complementary to said pivoted means whereby a blade may be flexed and held in position between said pivoted means and blade-supporting portion for shaving, a second handle section in line with and rotatable with respect to said first section, said second handle section having a part journaled in the bore of said extension and having a screw-threaded terminal normally engaged with the screw threads in said aperture, said extension ad'- jacent its lower end having a finger-gripping portion extending outwardly beyond the second handle section, whereby the latter will reniain free for rotation b hand while the firstsection 1s of the other hand, operating tension of the blade upon the release of the clamping member to forcibly oscillate said member outwardly and thereby releasethe blade.

3. In a razor, a blade-supporting portion having a normally depending bored extension constituting a 'handle section, means pivoted to said portion to secure a blade held by fingers fingers of one thereon and provided with a screw-threaded aperture, said pivoted-means being concaved transversely on its inner side, said blade supporting portion having an elevated central zone to cooperate with the eoncaved side to grip a blade and flex it to position for shaving, a second handle section in line with and rotatable with respect to saidy first section, said second handle section having a part journaled in the bore of said extension and having a screw-threaded termi engaged with the screw threads in said aperture, said extension adjacent its lower end having a finger-gripping portion extending outwardly beyond the second handle section, whereby the latter will remain free for rotation by fingers of one'hand while the first section is held by lingers of the other hand, operating to permit the tension of the blade upon the release of the clamping member to forcibly oscillate said member outwardly and thereby release .the blade.
