Description

Aug. 23, 1932. o. L. ALTVATER SAFETY RAZOR Filed April 22, 1951 0.45. flliva i'er.
Patented Aug. 23, 1932 UNITED STATES v1 AT ELN'I".QQFFICE 4 or 'ro 1.. awvarna, or mnmxnu. conoaano 'mn'ry won 7 Application filed April 22,
' when shaving hair under a persons arms as the blade and its holder have straight edges and since the arm pit is hollow and an arni must be held in a raised position during a shaving operation, a razor having a straight cutting edge will not fit properly into an arm pit and very often a person will be cut by an end portion of a blade.
Therefore one object of the invention is to provide a razor having its blade and the ortions of the razor between which the bla e is secured, so shaped that when the razor is in use it will fit properly into the hollow under a persons arm and hair may be shaved from the same without danger of cutting.
Another object of the invention is to provide the razor with blade engaging portions so constructed that'the razor may be easily assembled and when assembled the bladeand its guard iirmly secured and prevented from slipping out of its proper position.
Another object of the invention is to provide the razor without a handle curved longitudinally so that when the razor is in use, it may be easily held and its blade disposed in proper engagement with a persons arm during a shaving operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a razor which is very simple in construction and strongand durable.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved razor,
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the razor taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a view showing the upper .portion of the razor in section along the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the blade and its guard removed, and
Figure 5 is a view of the razor blade.
The handle 1 of this razor may be of any length and thickness desired and will prefiaai." serm Io. taaioo erably be circular in cross section. The handle curves longitudinally and has its upper end flattened and bent tojform an arm 2 which projects forwardly from the handle 1 and carries a header jaw 3 which extends u downwardly from the arm inifr'ont of the V handle in spaced relation thereto as [clearly shown in Figure 3. I
The lower edge 4 of this header jaw 3'is farcuate and is preferablya semi-circle with no its endsinters'ectlng the upper edge of the head but it will beunderstood'that the armate lower edge of the headmay constitute any portion of a circle desired. Lugs 5 project rearwardly from the head at opposite sides 5 thereof slightly below its upper edge as clearly shown in Figures 1, 2,and"4: and have their 'outer'side edge faces flushwith the arcuate edge face of the head.
blade 6 fits against the rear face ofthe 7 header jaw 3 and this blade has a sharpened arcuate lower edge 7 and hasits endpo'rtions shaped. as clearly. shown in Figured to form recesses or seats .8 and arms 9 whichare'so locatedthatwhen the blade is set in' place 7 against the rear face of the head 3 the 1ugs'5 Wlll project rearwardly through therecess'es 8 and the arms 9 engage over the lugs. Therefore the blade will be retained in its proper position against the head with its sharpened g ower edge 7 projecting a slight distance beyond the arcuateedge of the head. A guard 10 which conforms to the shape of the blade 6 fits against the rear face of the blade and is formed with recesses'll' through which the as lugsj5 project, and also formed with arms 12 extending across theupper edge faces of the lugs. The'lower edge portion 1 of the guard is bowedrearwardly as shown at 13 thereby providing the guard or'jawlOwith a curved portion disposed in shielding relation to the sharpened edge of the blade as shown in Figure?) and permitting the razor to be applied beneath'a persons arm and then tilted into proper position for shaving without dangeriof apersonbeing cutwhen the razor, is initially disposed in position for use.
In order to fretain the blade and guard i firmly in engagement with the head or jaw 3 A razor comprising at upper end reduced to forman overhanging there has been provided a set screw 14 which passes through a threaded opening 15 and has its forward end bearing against a thickened portion or block 1.6 formed'substantially in the center of the rear face of the guard.
This reinforces the portion of the guard against which the set screw engages and therefore the set screw may be tightened vto c firmly" hold the guard and blade in place without danger of pressure exerted by'the screw cracking the guard or quickly wearing I I g a a hole at the point where it'bears against the guard.
Vhen this'razor is in use, the blade is fitted against the guard then jectin grearwardly through the recesses in the blade an d guard to retain them in pro'per re lation to'the'head thc set screw is rotated by grasping the head 17 at its rear end inorder to move the forward end, ofthe set screwinto contact with the block 16. The set screvv'may then be tightened and the blade'and guard f willbe firmly held in place. The razor is then held by'itshandle and since't-he handle is curved longitudinally and the cutting edge of the blade and adjacent'edges of the guard and head are arcuateytherazor may be applied beneath a persons arm and hair removed without danger of cutting;
After'the shavingoperation 1s completed theset screw is loosened and the guard and blade canthen be removed and after bein washed and dried the razor again assembled or put away without being assembled. .until again needed.
\Vhat is claimedis':
