Description

May 22, 1928 L. .A. M ABEE SAFETY RAZOR Filed July 17, 192G Patented May 22, 1928.
UNITED STATES LOUIS A. MGABEE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application 1611 July 17, 1928. Serial No. 123,037.
This invention relates to razors and has special reference to the type of razor known as a safety razor.
More particularly the invention relates to a safety razor for shaving concave surfaces such as the armpit or the like. In the shaving of such surfaces vious that the user of the razor has to use first one hand and then the other. Consequently a fixed position for the razor handle for use by either hand must be a compromise between the two or more positions most efiicient for shaving with each hand.
One object of the invention is the pro- 5 vision of a safety razor wherein the handle may be readily shifted between positions best adapted for use by one hand to similar osisions best adapted for use by the other an Also the angular setting of the blade in such a razor for the most convenient position of use varies with the physical configuration of the user.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of razor wherein this angular relation between the handle and blade may be varied at the will of the user.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a razor constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a front view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail section through the head of the razor on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figu
re 4 is a view of the underside of the head with the handle removed.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the razor blade removed from the head.
Figure 6 is a top plan of the handle portion of the razor.
Figure 7 is an enlarged perspectlve view of the clamping end of said handle.
In the embodiment of the invention herein shown there is provided a guard member 10 longitudinally bowed and having an arcuate front edge provided with guard teeth 11 curved on their undersides. The rear edge of this member 10 is also arcuate in form and is provided adjacent each rear corner with upwardly curved lugs 12. In addition this base member has a central open ing 13 surrounded by a serrated ring 14 on it is ob-s the concave face, the serrations being preferably in the form of bevel gear teeth.
The clamping member 15 is likewise longitudinally bowed and has a sub-acute arcuate front edge 16. From the center of the clamp 15 projects a screw threaded post 16 and at the rear corners the clamp is provided with upstanding ears 17 which engage the lugs 12 upon the device being assembled, the post passing through the opening 13. The blade 18 is formed in the usual manner of highly tempered thin sheet steel and has an arcuate. forward cutting edge 19 and a central opening 20 to receive the post 16. Experience has shown that bowing the blade between the clamp and guard plates is prone to crack and break such blade and in order to prevent this I preferably slot the blade from the opening 20 to the rear edge as shown at 21 in Figure 5. The rear edge of this blade is preferably straight and at the corners, upon the razor being assembled, fits snugly against the ears 17 so that it is held in ptroper shaving position.
e handle of this razor includes a cylindrical grip portion 22 from the forward end of which extends an arm 23 carrying a yoke having a back 24 and side arms 25 which diverge from the back and have their forward ends connected by an arcuate rack 26 provided with teeth on its convex side which engage the teeth 14. when the device is assembled. In this rack is formed a longitudinal slot 27 for the reception of the post 16 and the back 24: is provided with a central opening 28 wherein is swiveled a sleeve nut 29 having a knurled head 30 by means of which it may be manipulated. The openin 28 is of such size that the nut is held loosely therein so that the yoke may not only be revolved with respect to the nut but may also be tilted so that the handle 22 may be caused to assume desired angular relation with the axis of the post 16 and to have its axis lie in any desired plane passing radially through the axis of the post.
The head 30 of the nut 29 is provided with a rounded shoulder 31 which passes through the back 24 of the yoke. Consequently, when the nut is loosened upon the post 16 the ham dle and the yoke may be rocked or swung upon the shoulder 31 of the head of the nut. Also the yoke handle may be turned with relation to the axis of the nut and the stud. Consequently, the handle may be disposed at any desired position with relation to the axis of the stud and when the nut is tightened upon the stud, the teeth 26 engage in the spaces between the teeth 14 and the bandle is fixed with relation to the guard 10.
It will also be noted that the clamping plate 15 at its rear edge is slightly offset to provide on an inner face thereof a shoulder 15, shown more clearly in Figure 3 of the drawing, and when the nut 29 is turned home on the post 16, the guard plate will cause the blade 18 to conform to the contour of the clamp plate and guard late and the inner edge of the blade will be orced in contact with the shoulder 15'. This shoulder 15' projects beyond the horizontal plane of the inner face of the clamp plate 15 and it will thus be seen that by ad usting the nut 29, adjustments may be made of the plates with respect to one another and correspondingly, an adjustment of the blade 18, but in all such adjustments between the shaving range said blade 18 will conform to the contour of the clamp plate and remain in contact with the latter.
In using the invention the blade is placed on the clamping plate with the post 16 projecting through the opening in the blade and the back edge of the blade resting against the ears. Then the lugs 12 are inserted through the ears and the guard plate folded down on the blade. Next the nut is screwed on the post and the handle tilted to the desired angle and revolved about the post to the desired position after which the nut is screwed home. This bows the blade and also locks the handle in the adjustment which is found best adapted for the user's purpose. Naturally the handle may be shifted in position as may be found expedient in the shaving operation.
There has thus been and efficient device of the for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Havin thus described the invention, what isclaime as new, is:
