INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Sept. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES MICHAEL J. DUFFY, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK SAFETY RAZOR AND HAIR CUTTER 1 Application'filed September 17, 1930. Serial No. 482,577.
This invention relates to combined safety razors and hair cutters which include detaohable handle and head structure.
In order to properly utilize the structure 5 for the hair cutting or shaving operations,
one object of the invention is to provide a safety razor, the handle of which may be detachably mounted on the head, at right angles' to the latter, and which, when the said handle is detached, at least part of the structure may be used for the hair cutting device, the handle of which is disposed in alignment with the head mechanism.
As safety razors have heretofore included i a perforate blade and guardelements, and a support which carried central posts or the like for accommodating the perforations, in
order to lock the, structure in the assembled position, another object of this invention .is the provision of simplified mechanism which includes guard and blade elements which are free from perforations, and also a support which may be constructed without projecting central posts.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor in which the blade or cutting element is adjustable, so that the blade, at least together with cooperating means, may be used also as a hair cutting element. For this latter purpose the blade is spaced from the guard, said means being a spacing instrumentality.
As the handle of the device is disposed in angular or aligned positions, for the respec tive hair cutting or shaving operations, as hereinbefore indicated, another obj ect' of the invention is the provislon of cooperating elements for facilitating assembly and operation of the combined device in either the hair cutting or shaving form.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out, or will become apparent, as the specification proceeds.
With the above indicated objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel constructions and combination and arrangement of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which latter show embodiments of the invention as) at present preferred.
In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the elements of a safety razor in spaced relation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of an assembled safety razor.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a hair cutting device.
Fig. 5 is an elevationalview of the structure shown in Fig. 4. v
Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; and
Figs. 7 and 8 are fragmentary detail perspective views.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
-As embodied in the structure shown in '1 Figures 1 to 3 the handle includes a hand grip portion 10, which may be chequered, and
' a threaded socket 11 for receiving one end of a manipulable shank, the opposite ends of which are threaded, as shown. This shank includes a disc 13, which may also be chequered.
The blade support is provided with a plain transversely curved body portion 14, from the opposite ends of which rise terminals or eX- tensions 15 and 16, the respective inner surfaces of which have therein grooves 17, 18. In order to slidably fit the said terminals the bladel9 and guard 20, which have also plain central body portions, are provided respectively with terminal recesses 21, 22, and 23, 24.
The guard 20, which is also transversly curved is provided with opposed teeth 25, 26, the terminal pairs of which serve as manipulable portions; and the blade 19, which is flexible, has thereon, between the recesses and the edges 27, 28, manipulable terminals, 29, 30, 31, 32.
Slidably mounted in the grooves 17, 18 one of the ends of each of which, as at 33, forms a stop, is a bridge piece or support member 34, theterminal ribs 35 36, of which are received in said slots. This bridge piece has therein a threaded aperture 37, which receives one end of the shank 12, so that on turning the latter home the blade is flexed in the assembled position of the head of the safety razor.
In figures 4 and 5 the structure is shown assembled in the form of a hair cutting device, which includes a transversely curved guard or comb 38, the teeth 39, 40 of which extend beyond the edges ofthe blade and are provided with terminal guides 41, 42, 43, 44, to space the blade from the head portion or surface from which the hair is being cut. These guides may be removable or adjustable, as shown in figure 8, at 41', 43, there being screws, 45, 46, or the like, in said guides to attach the same to the teeth of the comb, said guides, by reason of the fact that they are adjustable on a curved surface, are adapted to regulate the amount of hair cut oil, or, in other words, the shortness of a hair cut. This member 38 is otherwise like the guard 20, there being terminal recesses therein for mounting the same on the extensions of the support.
Removably mounted on the extensions 15, 16 is a handle 47, one end 48 or which is provided with terminals, as at 49, 50, for embracing said extensions. The end 48 is also provided with an aperture to receive one of the terminals of the shank 12, and on this shank is threadedly engageable a nut 51. In order to secure this nut in a relatively constant position, and to guard against misplacing the same said nut is freely revolvable in a plate or disc 52, which is attached to the end 48.
Disposed between the blade and the comb 38 is a shim 53, so that the whole of the edges of the blade are eflectively available for cutting purposes, no portion of the said edges being close to the teeth 40 of the guard. The guides 4144 may be of a length to suitably space the blade edges from the hair carrying surface, during the cutting operation.
The hereinbefore described construction admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention; therefore, it is the wish not to be limited to the precise arrangements shown and described, which are as aforesaid, by way of illustration merely. In other words the scope of protection contemplated is to be taken solely from the appended claims, interpreted as broadly as is consistent with the prior art.
\Vhat I claim as new is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a cap plate having depending end flanges, the flanges having slots cut in their inner faces, a handle-receiving member having end tongues fitting into the mentioned slots and spaced from the cap plate to receive a curved comb and a blade, a curved comb, and adjustable guides secured to the comb and adapted to regulate the length or the pair cut. 2. In a hair cutting device, holding means, a curved comb and a blade held by said holding means, said blade being adjacent said comb and adjustable means on said curved for turning the same and a handle for said device screwed onto an end of said screw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MICHAEL J. DUFFY.
