DRAFTING' TABLET Filed July 9, R328 lllillllllll patented Sept. 193i Unire sfr.
SAMUEL A. sTRzELczYmor MILWAUKEE', wisconsin DRAFTING TABLET Application filed July 9,
This invention relates to drafting tablets. Objects of this invention are to provide a novel form of drafting table, whichl is so constructed that a. plurality of straight edges, or rulers, are provided which are adapted to be moved either longitudinally of the tablet, or transversely thereof,.an d which are provided with graduations so that the utmost speed and ease may be obtained in laying out sketches or other drawings.
Further objects are to provide a novel form of drafting tablet, in which the paper is fed from a roll carried in a housing adjacentv the upper end of the tablet, and the paper passes '15 below stationary guides and may be withdrawn from the bottom of the table and torn off against the lowest stationary guide.
Further objects are to provide a drafting s table which is of extremely simple construction, which may be readily produced, and
which is practical in operation.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tablet with portions broken away.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. Y
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the tablet is composed ot' a base plate 1, which has projecting marginal flanges 2 (see Figure At the lower end of the tablet a transverse, stationary guide 3 is provided and has its ends bent over the marginal flanges 2, one of the ends being indicated by reference character 4. It will be seen that this stationary guide has a portion which passes over the projectingedge of the marginal flange inset within the said fiange, as indicated by reference character 5. This is to prevent the fixed guide 3 from slipping. The guide is graduated, as indicated.
A similar upper fixed guide 6 is also prod vided adjacent the upper end of the tablet. Between these guides a slidable rule 7, also provided with graduations, is provided and has its ends turned over and `guided by the guides 3 and 6, as most clearly shown in Figure 2. It is apparent that this rule may be 192s. semi- 116.291,455.
set at any desired distance from the margins 'of the paper sheetl, which is carried beneath the giiides'3 and 6. urther, anypdesired ver# tical measurement lmay be laid off along the rule 7 and acorresponding line drawn. Fur- 55 ther than this, a slidable, transverse rule 8 is provided and has its ends folded over the. marginal flanges'2 of the'base plate,.as indicated in igure 3. y This horizontal rule may be slid to any'position and the appropriate 66 distance laid o5 and the lines drawn as required in the sketch.
The papersheet 16 is fed from roll 16,. f This roll is carried by a central rod 9 which l is journaled in the vertical plates 10 and 11. 65 The vertical plate 10 has its bottom edge flanged and bent over the marginal guide k2, asl indicated in Figure 1j by the reference character 12. The vertical plate is integral with the horizontal plate or Vcover 13 which 70 yextends across the top 'of the roll and is provided witha keyhole type Vof slot 14 adjacent its free end. This keyhole type of Vslot receives the hook-like endl projecting upwardly from the vertical plate 11. The ver-Y tical plate is similarly provided with a portion flanged over the appropriate marginal edge 2 in a manner identically similar to that previously described. y
Thus, when it is desired to renew the roll, all that is necessary is tospring the hook-like end 15 inwardly into the enlargement of the keyhole lslot 14C, and thereafter swing the cover upwardly to ya slight distance. The end plates 10 and 11 may be sprung apart suf- 85 fciently to allow the removal of the used roll and the replacement of a new roll.
It will be seen that a very compact, selfcontained, and simple type of drafting tablet is providedvby this invention. y It will be 'seen gf further that the tablet may be vvery readily used tolay out sketches, plans, or any other drawing required, and that the measurements are carried by the sliding rules which are for the horizontal and vertical lines, and also are .95 carried by the rstationary upper and lower guides. Thus the utmost ease in sketching and drawing is afforded by this tablet.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is iii-1 1 G is provided by this invention.
tended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
The paper sheet 16 is fed from roll 16. This roll is carried by a central rod 9 which is journaled in the vertical plates 10 and 11. The vertical platev 10 has its bottom edge flanged and bent over the marginal guide 2, as indicated in Figure 1 by the reference character 12. The verticalv plate is integral With the horizontal plate or cover 13 which extends across the top of the roll and is provided with a keyhole type of slot 14 adjacent its free end. This keyhole type of slot receives the hook-like end 15 projecting upwardly from the vertical plate 11. The vertical plate is similarly provided with a portion flanged over the appropriate marginal edge 2 in a manner identically similar to that previously described.
Thus, when it is desired to renew the roll, all that is necessary is to spring the hook-like end 15 inwardly into the enlargement of the keyhole slot 14, and thereafter swing the cover upwardly to a slight distance. The end plates 10 and 1l may be sprung apart suficiently to allow the removal of the used roll and the replacement of a new roll.
If desired a cutout 17 `may be made in the bottom edge of the base plate so that the paper may be easily grasped in withdrawing it.
It will be seen that a very compact, selfcontained, and simple type of drafting tablet It will be vseen further that the tablet may be very readily used to lay out sketches, plans or any other drawing required, and that the measurements are carried by the sliding rules which are for the horizontal and vertical lines, and
also are carried by the stationary upper and lower guides. Thus the utmost ease in sketching` and drawing is afforded by this tablet.
Although the invention hasbeen described i in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim 'A drafting tablet comprising a base plate having laterally projecting marginal flanges along its longitudinal edges, a pair of spaced graduated guides having their ends folded over the said flanges with a portion thereof set into said flanges, said guides being spaced upwardly a slight distance from the base plate to receive a sheet of paper between the guides and the base plate, a transverse graduated rule mounted upon the base plate between the spaced guides and having its ends slidably engaged with the marginal flanges of the base, and a longitudinally extending graduated rule mounted upon the base with its ends slidably engaging the spaced guides and traversing the transverse graduatel rule whereby the longitudinal graduated rule may be moved over the plate and cooperate with the graduated guides vas well as the transverse rule, the baise plate having a notch at one end thereof extending beneath one of the spaced guides whereby a sheet of paper be neath the guide may be engaged by the operator to'move the same beneath the guide.
A In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wis consm.
