Description

Se t; 1, 1931. R. E. THOMPSON ET AL I 3 RAZOR CASE Filed Nov. 26. 1927 Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RALPH E. THOMPSON, OF BROOKLINE, AND RICHARD M. DUGLDALE, OF DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO GILLETTE SAFETY RAZOR COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A, CORPORATION OF DELAWARE RAZOR CASE Application filed November 26, 1927. Serial No. 235,963.
r This invention relates to cases for safety razors and its object is to provide a neat, compact and generally attractive case for containing a safety razor, or safety razor parts, as well as a supply of new blades and a receptacle for the deposit of used blades.
In one of its aspects, the invention comprises a pair of hinged compartments having an intermediate partition which may be enclosed between the two compartments. One compartment is, accordingly, utilized for the reception of the razor or razor parts while the other compartment is available for containing the blades. Preferably, though not necessarily, the partition may be of such size and shape as to act as a cover for either compartment.
We prefer to provide pockets for the new blades and for used blades upon the surface of the hinged partition so that, when the latter is moved into a position to close the compartment containing the razor, the pockets for the blades are brought into a position of easy access. This construction constitutes another feature of our invention and is important in contributing to the compact design and the efficient utilization of space characteristic of our improved case.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the closed short sides. The lower compartment is provided with a false bottom 12 moulded at their rear edge by a hinge of a commercial type which, as shown in Fig. 2, is covered by a facing sheet 22.
A partition 30 is hinged in the case in a position to close either compartment according as it may be swung one way or the other. This partition corresponds in contour to the shape of the- compartments 10 and 20, being just enough smaller to fit within the walls of either compartment and is provided with a knob 32 on one side. As herein shown, it is hinged to the rear wall of the compartment by a hinge comprising a wire 34 securely attached to the partition bytongues 36 struck from the body thereof, bent over the wire and having out-turned ends 38 acting as hinge pintles and being engaged by tongues 39 struck out from the material'of the rear wall of the compartment 20. This construction aifords a strong and satisfactory hinge at'low cost and capable of convenient manufacture.
On the upper side of the partition is located a pocket 40 for new blades and a pocket 42 for old blades. These pockets are arranged side by side, of the proper dimensions to receive a commercial package of razor blades and are appropriately marked.
In use, blades are drawn from the package contained. in the pocket for new blades and, when ready for discard, are deposited in the package in the pocket for used blades. The pockets 40' and 42 open toward the free end of the partition so that the blade packages are readily available to the user.
The proportions of the 'compartment lO for the razor parts are such that when the partition 30 is closed upon this compartment, it engages the razor parts and serves to retain them securely in their respective recesses. On the other hand, when the partition is swung into the position shown in Fig. 2, the razor parts are exposed and the blades are safely enclosed and protected from loss or moisture.
The precise shape of the case is, of course, immaterial and in its design Will conform to the shape of the particular razor for 30 Which it is intended. It will be understood that the corners of the case may be cut off, rounded or left square as preferred. Further, the partition may extend for the full Width and breadth of the -case,-as herein 15 shown, or may be of sufficient size only to carry the pockets for the blades.
Having thus described our invention, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
253;) A hinged case comprising connected compartments, one'having a cover of sheet material with tongues struck up from it, a Wire secured to the cover by said tongues and having oppositely disposed ends disposed parallel to the edge of the cover, said ends being received Within sockets formed by tongues struck up from the material of the compzirtmentand forming hinge pintles for the cover.
so Signed at Boston, Massachusetts, this --tWenty-first day of November, 1927.
' RALPH E. THOMPSON.
RICHARD M. DUGDALE.
