Description

Sept. 1, 1931. AIPOTDEVIN APPARATUS FOR JOINING STRIP MATERIALS Filed June 27, 1950 INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADOLPI-I POTDEVIN,.OF GARDEN GITY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO POTDEVIN MACHINE.
COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK APPARATUS FOR JOINING STRIP MATERIALS A Application filed June 27,
. This invention is directed to an improved mechanism for use in connection with the application of fastening devices along the edge of strip material, as for example in connection with the stapling or splicing machines used in belt lacing, andis particularly well adapted for use in connection with the printing blanket construction employed in connection with bag making machinery as disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 450,674, filed May 8, 1930, wherein the printing blanket is made in sections joined by staples or loops applied to the adjacent edges of the sections of the blanket to be joined or spliced, the staples receiving a pin or pintle by which the staples or loops in the edge of one section of the blanket are removably united to the staples or loops in the adjacent edge of the other section of the blanket.
No'novelty is alleged for the stapling machine per se illustrated in the present application. These machines, however, are diflicult to manipulate so that the staples or loops may be properly applied to the edges of the material to be joined.
An object of the present invention is the provision of means whereby accuracy in application of the staples 'or loops is assured.
In the drawings accompanying this application:
1 Fig. 1 showsanembodiment of my invention in part sectional elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view; and Fig. 3 is a detail.
Referring to the drawings in detail: 1 designates a bench or table suitable for use in the practice of my invention. The top of this bench is equipped with a pair of spaced parallel angle irons designated 2 and 3, respectively, fastened to the table in any suitable manner.
" which the fastening devices or staples are to be applied.
' The staple-applying. machine which as above explained is not of new construction so 4 designates a rest or support, the upper 1930. Serial No. 464,251.
far as I am concerned is designated 6. To
the sides of :his machine adjacent the rear I bolt or otherwise apply a pair of guides 7 and i 8, and adjacent the forward end of the machine at each side thereof I apply two guide.
plates9 and 10. Each of the guides? and 8 is provided with a spring pushed pin 11, a spring 12 being provided for each pin for this purpose. The pins are held outwardly by these springs to contact with the flange of the. 50
Ward end of the machine, including the guide:
This construction, therefore, provides a&
machine which is guided between the webs of the angles 2 and 3 so as to maintain the machine at all times properly aligned with the edge of the material being operated upon,
movement of the stapling machine as a whole:
being permitted so as to enable the machine to be brought into proper position transversely of the material.
The material to which the staples are to be applied has been designated 14: and as above mentioned is supported by the upper surface 5 of the support 4:.
Inasmuch as the supporting surface 5 is inclined toward the machine 6, it will be seen that if the material 14 is placed upon this sup-" port and pushed forwardly until the edge thereof engages the staple holder 15 of the machine the edge ofv the material will lie truly parallel to the stapling machine, and that when the machine is operated to apply the staples or loops l6, proper application of these fastening devices is assured.
It will be understood, of course, that the material 14 may be considerably wider than the machine 6, as illustrated, but the pro-:,
vision of the guiding mechanism for the ma chine insures the lateral shifting of the ma It will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction above described Within the purview of my invention. 7 What I claim is 1. In an apparatus for applying fastening devices to the edge of a strip of material, the Combination of a support for the material, a
1 fastener-applying machine, said support be- 10 ing inclined toward said'machine, and a combinedsupport and guideway for the machine for supporting the machine; adjacent the edge of the material and for guiding the ma- 7 chine adjacent to and parallel With the edge.
of the material being operated upon.
' 2. In an apparatus for applying fastening devices to the edge of a strip of material, the combination of a support [for the material, a fastener-applying machine, guideway's for said machine, said support being inclined to;-
Ward said machine and said guideWays being so disposed With respect tosaid support as to maintain the machine parallel to the strip of materialbeing operated upon, guide platescarried at the sides of said machine, outardly extending spring-propelled pins car- 7 cried by said plates and yieldingly engaging one of said guideWays, and guide plates at the sides of said machine adjacent the opposite ends thereof and engageable With the otherv guideway whereby said machine is yieldingly held in the guideways tobe movaw ble therealong in a path parallel to the edge of the strip of material being operated upon.
I This specification signed this 25" day of QJune, 1930. w
' ADOL'PH PO-TDEVIN.
