Abstract
627,218. Packeting by wrapping-up. BURGESS, A. F. (International Cellu-Cotton Products Co.). April 23, 1946, No. 12280. [Class 94(i)] In a method of packaging a multi-ply, previously - compressed and expanded, creped, cellulosic pad, the pad is recompressed in a lengthwise direction while maintaining the width and thickness of the pad substantially uniform, the recompressed pad being restrained against longitudinal expansion or buckling while a sleeve member having longitudinal and peripheral dimensions substantially equal to the equivalent dimensions of the recompressed pad is placed about said recompressed pad and then a close fitting, outer covering including a sleeve portion is applied to the combination of said pad and sleeve so that said outer covering extends at right angles to said first-mentioned sleeve. The outer covering may be sealed after being positioned upon the inner sleeve. In apparatus for carrying out the above method a pad 11 to be recompressed is placed on the portion 68 of the lower plate 25 of a recompressor chute 19 and is pushed into the space between the plate 25 and the metal plates 23 which may be cut away and bevelled. Converging belts 21, having backing supports 31, carry the pad 11 through the chute 19 and propel it between sheet-metal jaws 33, 35, each of which includes a flat main portion and upstanding side portions 41, 39. The jaws 33, 35 are supported so that they are cantilevered relative to the support means which includes a shaft 43, on which the upper jaw 33 is hingedly supported on a work-table 17 by bearing supports 45 biassed downwardly by tension springs 47. The jaws are provided with cut-away portions 37 for removing the pad after an inner sleeve 69 in the form of a flat tube, joined along the edges 71 and slipped over the jaws 33, 35, is applied thereto. The said jaws may be slightly compressed to facilitate removal. To apply the outer sleeve, the pad 11 with the inner sleeve 69 in place thereon is placed on a platform plate 49 against a guide 51 and is slid in the direction of its width between an upper sheet metal jaw 53 and a lower jaw. The outer sleeve 73 in the form of e.g., a flat bag of heavy Kraft paper, is slid over the jaws. When the inner sleeve 69 enclosing the pad 11 completely fills the bag the combination is removed by pulling it away from the jaw 53 and the associated lower jaw by means of V-shaped slots 57 in the jaws, which have a cantilever type of support. The ends 75 of the outer sleeve may then be folded over and sealed in the usual manner, as shown in Fig. 9. These jaws have side portions which cooperate, as do the side portions of the jaws 33, 35, and are similarly supported on a work-table 17 to perform a similar function. Tension springs 67 may be provided. As an alternative, the inner sleeve may comprise a bag of, e.g., paper or fabric, said bag having overlapping edges, as in the sleeve 69, which are adhesively attached together, one of the ends being closed by a folded-over flap which is glued or otherwise attached in place, the other end being left open.
