COMBINED TABLE AND CHAIR Filed March 20, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 v g g gvvuentoc 1 Ii 10ml? Patented Aug. 18, 1931 UNITED STATE LOUIS KOCJAN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCGNSIN COMBINED TABLE AND CHAIR Application filed March 20, 1930. Serial No. 437,493.
This invention relates to furniture and has special reference to a combination chair and table.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel'construction of devices of this character wherein the back of a chair is so connected to the remainder of the chair that it may be readily moved to form a table top.
A third important object of the invention is to provide novel and improved means for supporting the combined top and back in each of the positions in which it is placed to form a top in one position-and a back in the other.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide improved guide means for the top and back member, such means being arranged to guide the edge which forms the bottom of the back into proper position to engage its supports.
A fifth important object of the invention is to provide positioning means for the com bined top and back whereby, when serving as either top or back, the member is held in proper position.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention arranged as a table;
Figure 2 is a side elevation with the parts in the same position;
Figure 3 is a side elevation with the movable part arranged to form a chair back;
Figure 4 is a plan view with the parts as shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a rear elevation with the parts as in Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 3 but with the movable part shown in slightly elevated position to illustrate the manner in which it is guided in engaging the lower supports;
Figure 7 is a section on the line 77 0 Figure 2;
Figure 8 is an enlarged section on the line 8-8 of Figure 2; and
Figure 9 is a detail of a certain guide member used herewith.
In the invention as here disclosed, there is provided a main portion forming a chair body. This chair body has front legs 10 and rear legs 11 of substantially the same height and the upper ends of the front and rear legs are connected by arms 12. A seat 13 is fixed to the legs below these arms. These parts, in the form here shown, are rigidly and per manently connected. A pivot bracket 14: having an outwardly offset upper end 15 is fixed to the outer face of each rear leg adjacent its top and is inclined forwardly therefrom. At the upper end of this bracket is a pivot pin 16 and mounted on this pin between each bracket and the adjacent arm is one end of a link 17 which has its other end pivoted to one leg of an angle bar 18 about centrally thereof. A bracket 19 is fixed to the other leg of said angle bar and the pivot pin 20 carrying the link is supported both by this bracket and the angle bar. These angle bars support the table top and chair back member 21. 1
On the outside face of each front leg and at the top thereof is mounted an angle iron forming a front support 22. One leg of the angle iron projects laterally and is provided in its top end with a notch 23 which cooperates with anotch 24 in the respective bar 18 to lock the top against movement either laterally or back and forward when these parts are engaged. Similarly each rear leg has an angle bracket 24 fixed thereon and provided with a notch 25 in its outwardly projecting leg. The rear portions of the bars 18 engage in these notches 25 when the device is arranged as a table and the links 17 also engage these notches 25 upon the device being arranged as a chair.
The rear or bottom ends of the bars 18 are provided with notches 26 and on the rear legs below their tops are secured loops 27 positioned to engage the notches 26 upon the device being arranged as a chair and thus to form bottom supports for the chair back. Inclined guide brackets 28 are secured to the rear legs to guide the bars 18 into proper engaging positions with these bottom supports.
By means the member may be readily moved between the positions shown in F igures 2 and 3 and, when in either of these positions, be there securely held.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified. 7
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
I claim:-
1. The combination with a chair frame having front and rear legs of substantially the same height, arms and a seat; of a combined table top and chair back, a link connection between said combined top and back and the chair frame whereby the top may rest horizontally above the arms in one position and behind the rear legs above the seat in a second position, supporting means spaced vertically on the rear legs for holding the top and back in its second position, and guide means on said rear legs for guiding the lower edge portion of the top and back into engagement with the lower supporting means.
2. The combination with a chair frame having front and rear legs of substantially the same height, arms and a seat; of a combined table top and chair back, a link connection between said combined top and a back and the chair frame whereby the top may rest horizontally above the arms in one position and behind the rear legs above the seat in a second position, and supporting means comprising notched brackets on the arms and angle irons on the back, said brackets being spaced horizontally and carried at the front and rear of the arms for holding the top and back in the first named position.
3. The combination with a chair frame having front and rear legs of substantially the same height, arms and a seat; of a combined table top and chair back, a link connection between said combined top and back and the chair frame pivotally mounted at both ends whereby the top may rest horizontally above the arms in one position and behind the rear legs above the seat in a second position, supporting means horizontally on said arms and carried at the front and rear of the arm for holding the top and back in the first named position, and other supporting means carried on the rear legs below the rear supporting means on the arms to cooperate with the top and back and support the top and back in its second position.
4. The combination with a chair frame having front and rear legs of substantially the same height, arms and a seat; of a combined table top and chair back, a link connection between said combined top and back and the chair frame whereby the top may rest horizontally above the arms in one position and behind the rear legs above the seat in a second position, supporting means horizontally on said arms and carried'at the front and rear of the arms for holding the top and backin the first named position, other supporting means carried on the rear legs below the rear supporting means on the arms to cooperate with the top and back and support the top and back in its second position, and guide means on said rear legs for guiding the lower edge portion of the top and back into engagement with the lower supporting means.
5. The combination with a chair frame having front and rear legs of substantially the same height, arms and a seat; of a combined table top and chair back, a pair of angle bars fixed to said back, links each having one end pivoted to a respective bar adjacent its center, pivot brackets supported on the upper parts of the rear legs and having the remaining ends of the links pivoted thereto, front supports carried by the upper parts of the front legs and having notches in their upper ends, said bars having notches in their forward portions cooperating with the notches of the front supports, upper rear supports carried by the upper parts of the rear legs and having notches in their upper ends to engage the bars in one position of the top and back member and to engage the links in a second position of said member, bottom supports carried by the rear legs in spaced relation below the last supports, said bars having notches in their ends to engage the bottom supports, and guide members carried on said rear legs to guide the bars into bottom support engaging positions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
