GATE 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Filed June 4, 1930 Invcnlor iv I A llorney I m W w Patented Aug. 11, 1931 UNITED STATES JOHN A. HUNT, or MIAMI, MANITOBA, cniuann GATE Application filed June 4,
The present invention relates to new and useful improvement in gates and more particularly to the opening and closing mechanism therefor, the primary object of the invention being to provide a swingable gate having means associated therewith which will shift the gate to opposite sides of a pair {of gate posts, so that the gate may be easily moved to open and closed position.
1 Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a gate of the above men- .tioned character embodying a construction for operating the same which is compact, simple in construction and one which is durable and efficient in practice.
With the above and numerous other ob- {iects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the 'combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate structure embodying the features of my invention,
5 Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof,
, Figure 4 is a detail horizontal section taken "substantially on the line 4.4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is adeta-il horizontal section taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a gate .post from which a portion 6 of a fence extends in one direction.
Numerals 7 denotes a pair of fence posts disposed in spaced relation to each other a distance from the post 5, the gateway being between the post 5 and the posts 7. A fence portion 8 extends from one of the posts 7 and is offset to the remaining portions of the fence 6 and 9. The upper ends of the posts 7 are bifurcated and between the furcations at their upper extremities is a cross bar 10 extending beyond the sides of the gateway and having depending hangers 11 at the ends' thereof, a pair being disposed at each end and between the lower ends of each pair there is rockably mounted as at 12 a lever 14, the in 1.530. Serial No. 459,134,.
ner end of which extends between the furoations of each-of the adjacent posts 7.
Q11 the. outer ends of the levers are prefer- I ably chains 15 depending downwardly therefrom. vLinks or rods 16' are pivotally en-. gaged with the inner ends of the levers that depend downwardly. The gat is d ed by the numeral 17 and adjacent one end at i s tophas a pair of spaced brackets 18 and 19 rising therefrom- .A. pair of rocker bars 20 are pivotally engaged with the bracket member 19 to extend one'to each side of the gate and the lower ends are rockably mounted on arod 21 extending through thelower portions ofthepost 7 ad jacent the groundiand also through blocks 22 which extend along the ground from thepost 7 away from the post 5. Rocker bars20' are pivotally engaged with the bracket 18-and with a rod 21 extendingthrough the end portion'ofthe blocks 22.
The bars 20 and 21 are all ofthe. same length. The links or rods .16 are pivotally engaged withintermediate portionsof the bars 20. 'Thefree end of the'gate is adapted to be received in a fork 25 on, the end of a bolt 26through the. post 5 when the gate is in a closed positionas shown in full line in Fig ure 1.
Now by pulling on either of the chains 15 to rock one of the levers 14 it will be seen that'the gate may be raised and rocked past center so as to gravitate to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 at which time it rests on the spaces on the rods 21 and 21'.
l/Vhen the gate is closed one end is disposed between the post 7. It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to 109 without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a gate structure of the type embodying a pair of transversely spaced uprights on a line with and spaced from a gate post, a longitudinally movable gate between the uprights and levers on the uprights having links connected at each side of the gate to the middle portion of pairs of bars pivoted at their 7 upper ends to the gate and at their lower ends to a support disposed between the lower end portions of the uprights, pivot brackets for pivoting said upper ends of the bars to the top of the gate comprising each a standard rising from the top of thegate carrying at its upper end a transverse axle projected at each side outwardly of the gate and adapted to pivotally carry and retain said bars at its outer ends, said bars being maintained at said outer ends of the axle by spacers on the axle between the standard and the said bars, said support for the lower ends of the bars comprising a pair of spaced elongated blocks each secured at one end to the inside of said lower end portion of an upright by a bolt extending through said uprights and the blocks, said bolt carrying on its intermediate portion the lower ends of a pair of said bars spaced from the blocks and from each other by spacers on said bolt, and another bolt through the other ends of the blocks carrying likewise on its intermediate portion the lower ends of another pair of said bars and spacers for maintaining said other pair-of bars in spaced relation to each other and to the blocks, said blocks being disposed to project from the side Ofthe uprights opposite the gate post.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN A. HUNT.
