SWINGING GATE.
Application filed February 10, 1920. Serial No. 357,560.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ltLlAnznLL C. Power, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to ake and use the same.
My invention relates to swinging gates, the principal object being to provide a gate which may be swung to a vertical position to one side of the driveway so that no part of the gate will olfer an obstruction to a vehicle passing through the driveway.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a vertically swinging gate equipped with an operating mechanism that may be operated from either side of the gate to'open and close the same without necessitating dismounting from the vehicle.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a gate of this type which when in either horizontal or vertical position cannot vibrate laterally so as to cause wearing or the bearings upon which the gate is mounted, the construction being such as to also prevent the gate from sagging to contact with the ground when in closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gate and manually operable operating mechanism therefor which is simple in construction. consists of few parts and may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects and advantages in mind, my invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construc tions and arrangements, operations all of which will be hereinafter enlarged upon and recited in. the subjoined claim, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention. the gate being illustrated in closed position;
Figure 2- is an end elevation taken at the right of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevation illustrating the gate in open position;
Figure 4: is a top plan vview of the gate in closed position; and Figure 5 is a perspective of one of the elements embodied in the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, the numeral 5 indicates a pair of spaced p rallel vertical gate posts which are supported in the ground in any desirable manner such as embedding the same in a concrete foundation, the upper ends of these posts being extended at right angles in reverse directions as indicated at 6, the right angularly extending parts being strengthened by angu'larly disposed braces 7 which are secured to the parts 6 adjacent their outer ends and are secured to the vertical posts 5 inter mediate their ends.
Disposed between the posts 5 and countersunk in the ground is a channel member 8, the rear end of which projects beyond the posts 5 and rests upon an angle iron 9 disposed transversely of the posts 5 and bolted or otherwise secured thereto.
Extending vertically from the ground at the opposite end of the channel member, is a channeled standard 10 which serves to guide the gate in its movement and to prevent the free end thereof from moving laterally.
The numeral 11 designates the gate which includes a rectangular frame 12 across which the usual wire strands are stretched. Embracing the lower right hand corner of the gate and soldered or otherwise secured thereto is a U-shaped plate 13 formed with oppositely extending bearings 13 at its lower edge through which a pin 14 extends,
the latter extending transversely from the vertical posts 5 in close proxlmity to the channel member 8.
To the outer ends of erative connection of the rods 18.
with the lower ends Extending transversely through the U-shaped plates 13 at its inner edge and oft center from the point of pivotal connection oi the plate 13 is a pin 21 and pivotally connected with the ends of the pin upon opposite sides otthe U-shaped plate are links 22 having their opposite ends pivotally connected with the links 19 adjacent the cars 20.
Operating elements are suspended from the free ends of the levers 16 which are within reach of the driver of a vehicle where upon pulling downwardly on either of the operating elements, the gate will be swung to the position indicated in Figure 3. After the vehicle has driven through the gateway, the operator may gras the operating elemciits on the opposite side of the gateway to swing the gate inwardly until the gate is past dead center, the gate then assuming closed position by gravity.
In order to cushion the gate during the opening and closing operation, bumpers 24: are arranged in the channel member 8 at its ends. The bumpers 2a are so arranged as to engage the gate in such a manner as to support the weight of the gate thereby relieve the bearings and pin upon which the former are mounted against undue strain.
A longitudinally adjustable weight 25 is mounted upon the inner end bar of the gate at its upper end, the purpose of which is to cause the gate to quickly fall to open position after the operating mechanism has been actuated and to prevent the gate from rebounding upon assuming the open position.
The structure illustrated and described is a practical embodiment of the invention but I wish to here state that my invention is susceptible to various changes and that my limits of such changes are only governed by what is claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is z An apparatus of the class described hav ing space-d. posts, a vertically movable gate, a reinforcing plate at the lower rear corner of the gate disposed between the posts and of substantially U-shape to overlap both sides of the gate, links, means pivoting said links to the plate, said links being movable between the plate and posts and in the closed position. of the gate projecting beyond opposite sides of said posts, a pivot member for said plate spanning said posts, bearings extending laterally from the Jlate on opposite sides thereof and dispose on said pivot member and engageable with the posts to prevent binding between the links and posts, links operable in planes between the posts and extending away and downwardly with respect to the gate, means pivoting said second links to the posts and to the first links, operating levers pivoted to the posts for movement without the plane of movement of the gate, and operative connections between said levers and the second mentioned links,
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
