r1`his invention relates to toys and has for an obj ect the provision of a toy of the wheeled type adapted for the amusement of young children, and which includes a. mechanism simulating the driving action of an engine.
To this end, the invention comprises a tray having a pair of cylinders with pistons operating therein, with means including a cross head and pitman for connecting these pistons with wheel operated crank arms to operate the pistons.
The invent-ion further includes novel means for mounting the wheel and for providing a guide for the crosshead slide, together with means for rigidly mounting the cylinders.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrat- 20 ed in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view partly in section.
Figure 8 is a top plan view with a portion of the handle broken away.
Figures 4 and 5 are enlarged Sectional views taken respectively on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 30 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the handle of the toy which may be of any suitable length or material. Secured along opposite sides of the handle are channel bars 11. These bars extend beyond one end of the handle and their opposite side flanges are removed, so that their outer ends 12 provide bearings for a crank shaft 13 upon which is rigidly mounted a wheel 14. The forward ends of the bars 11 thus provide forks between which the wheel 14 is mounted. The shaft 13 includes oppositely disposed crank arms 15 which extend from opposite sides of the wheel 14.
Secured within the channel bars 11 by means of screws or other fastening devices 16 are reversely arranged channel bars 17.
5C* These bars 17 are provided with elongated Serial No. 487,571.
openings 18 and extending through these openings are bolts 19 whichare carried by guide blocks 20. The heads 21 of the bolts 19 are disposed withinV the channel bars 17 and mounted upon these, bolts beyond the guide blocks 2O are the outer bifurcated ends 22 of piston rods 23.
The rods 23 extend into cylinders 24 which are located upon opposite sides of the handle 10 and which engage the ianges of the channel bars 11 and are held in place by straps 25. The straps 25 extend around the cylinders and handle wheel brackets 26 at one end of the cylinders serve to assist in securing the latter in position. Fistons 26 operate within the cylinders and the latter are provided with openings 2S for the escape of pressure. Also mounted upon the bolts 19 within the bifurcated ends 22 of the piston rods are pitmen 29. These pitmen are also pivotally mounted upon the crank arms 15 so that when the wheel 14 is rotated, the guides 2O will be reciprocated to impart reciproca-tory motion to the pistons within the cylinders.
The invention is susceptible of Various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope o-f the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a toy, a handle, a transversely chan` nel-shaped bar secured along opposite sides of the handle and extending beyond one end thereof to provide a fork, a wheel journaled within the fork, crank arms extending from opposite sides of and fast with the wheel, cylinders positioned within the inner ends of the channel bars upon opposite sides of the handle, means to rigidly secure the cylinders in position, a slide operating within each of the channel bars, a p-iston rod pivotally secured to each slide and extending into each cylinder, a piston located within each cylinder and connected to each rod, and pitmen connecting the. slides and crank arms.
2. In a toy, a handle, a transversely channelshaped bar secured along opposite sides of the handle and extending beyond one end thereof to pro-vide a fork7 a wheel journaled within the fork, crank arms extending from opposite sides of and fast With the Wheel, cylinders positioned Within the inner ends of the ehannelbars upon opposite. sides of the handle, means to rigidly secure the cylinders in position, rerersely arranged channel bars secured Within the irst'mentioned bars and having slots `therein and defining guides, blocks, pivot bolts Carried by the blocks and extending through said slots and having their heads positioned Within the channel bars, piston rods pivotally mounted upon the bolts and extending y into the cylinders, pistons Within the Cylinders upon the inner ends of the rods, and pitmen having their inner ends mounted upon the pivot bolts and their outer ends mounted upon the Crank arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
