Description

C. W. MILLER. u BARBEn-'FENcE-WIRE.
l:I\Io.1 81,533. .Patented Aug. 29, 12ms.`
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. MILLER, 0E SYGAMOEE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED FENCE-WIRES. y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,533, dated August 29,1876; application filed July 1,1876.
To. all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MILLER, of Sycamore, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Barbed-Wire Fences, of -which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanyng drawing, and to the letters vof reference marked thereon.
This invention relates specially to the construction of the barb, and to the manner of securing the same to the wire extending between the fence-posts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side- View of a barbed-Wire fence provided with my improvements; and Figs. 2 and 3, views of parts of the same on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
A A are the fence-posts, and B the Wires connecting the same together. C C are the barbs, formed of pieces of wire sharpened at the ends, and bent as shown in the drawing. The barbs are fastened to the wires A by means of ine pliable wire, which is wrapped` or wound around them, forming a spiral vor Y coil.
The principal advantage of this invention is that fences embodying it may be constructed without the aid of skilled labor, and that no tools are required in the bending of the barbs and their attachment to the fence-wires, other than those usually found in the possession of farmers. A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and Wish to secure by Letters Patentv of the United States, is- Y .In a barbed-wire fence, the barbs C, bent as shown, and attached to the wires A by means of ne pliable Wire, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 15th day of June, A. D.
CHARLES W. MILLER.
