IRONING lBOARD Filed Nov. 2. 1929 je J Patented .uly 14, 1931 UNITED VSTATES UUTE`BAKKE, OF WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN mon-ING BOARD Application md November 2, 1929. serial No. 404,261.
' This invention relates to ironinghoards which are `adapted to be normally `housed within wall cablnets when not in use. y
While boards of the type that. are normal-Y I ly housed in wall cabinets are now in common use jthey re uire that a considerable s ace be left undbstructed immediately in ont of the cabinet so that the board may be swung downwardly and still leave a sulfi- 10 cient free area to permit ample working space around the boardv for the person ironing. In `many instances the positionmg of the ironing` board cabinet by buildersV is not in conformity with the needs or desires of u the housewife who is called upon to make frequent use of the same. The board of the present invention overcomes the objections noited in he preceding ar a h b. bein so esigne as to permit n its swlin inga horizontal plane either toward the walIadj acent one side or the other of the cabinet. In `addition to providing an ironing board `which may be swung on a ver'- tical axis I have provided simple and effecs tive means whereb the board may readily be anchored in an esired' position of lateral adjustment whi e the same is in position for use. In this manner I insure the sturdiness of a fixed board and simultaneously provide n sufficient mobility of the board to permit its being positioned in such a manner as toprovide ample workin space 'without requiring the necessityof shi ing furniture inthe room to provide amplespace for accomplishing the Y desired work.
One object of the present invention is the provision of simple and effective means to permit 4lateral swinging fof the board when thesame has been wlthdrawn from the cabinet in order to allow for the use of a full sized board within a partially restricted vspace which would otherwise require the use of a,
Wlvfrom the following description of an illus- Vtaken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
trative embodiment of the present invention' s shown in the accompanying drawings.
AFigure 1 is a sectionalview` taken on the line l-l of the Fig. 2 showing a board in horizontal position. i
Figf is a plan View of the ironing'board Fig. 3 is a bottoml p-lan View of the rear end of the board showing the supporting means therefore. y 60 Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the lower end of the brace member showing the supporting means therefore.
Fig. 5 is asectional View on the `line 5 5 of Fig. 3.` i
Theironing board shown in thel accompanying drawings comprises a board adapted to 'be swung into a wall cabinet 11 when the same 'is not in use. The'sidewalls of the cabinet provide suitable mounting To means for ways within which theboard is guided during the process of withdrawing it for use or replacing it within the cabinet. In the present instance the ways are'p'rovided by the application of blocks 12 to the inner faces ofV the sidewalls of the, cabinet 11. Vertical slots 13 in the blocks '12 form guides for a board supporting member 14. f The upper ends of the slots 13 are preferably 5 formed in such a manner asto permit the S0 board to be 'drawn forwardly a sufficient distance to insure a irm anchorageforthe board and retain it in desired position for use.r A. pair .of trunnions 15 are formed on theends of the member 14. These trunnionsl are '85" slidable within theslots 13 to permit the board to be swung out of orrinto the wall cabinet. The board 10 is providedrwith a. reduced end portion 10 which is normallyl retained between a block 16 and the support- 9.0
ing .member 14.
A vertical pivot pin' 17 is preferably anchored in the block 16 midway between the Vextremities thereof. This pin 17 extends through the reduced portion 10 of theboard and provides a pivot about which the board may be swung when itwhas been withdrawn from the cabinet. A pair of bolts 18 are anchored adjacent the ends of the member 16 and extend downwardly through the suping the bolts is to permit the board'tif swing horizontally on the pinlll withoutrcontacte ing with the edge of the board. The amount of rotation of the board in either directionus determined by a pair cf slaiiting faces 22 which are formed a boa-rd 10 and the reducedportionl thereofi Thesefaces 22`are adapted' t'o contactA with the' member 1li to limit the movement offthe board with respectito tliesupporting member' 142 The free end oi" the board 10 is; suliported. by a suitable brace member prefi e'ra'bly formed withA a pair of legs 23; A.
hinge 24 which is attached to the board 10 and the' upper extremity of the brace serves to anchor' the brace and board and provid-e a rocking` connection between the two meinbe'rs. Thelower' extremities oi the leas 23 are roclably connectedt'o a supporting inember 25 bymeans of hinges: 2G. A pivot pin Q'fanc'liored'in a 'tal'se bottom Q8 of the cabi net 1 1 Serves to permit horizontal' rotation of? the member 1n accordance with lateral' movementof.` the board 10 the menib'er 2S' serves as a loadA sustaining support for the' brace memberand board' 10;
The board IOwhich is normally housed within the cabinet' 11 may be withdrawn from the' cabinet by pulling the free end thereoi:` forwardly thus drawing-the supportingmem-Y ber" 14' upwardly alongv Als the board`reaclies a itma'y'be drawn forward to permit tlietrunthe guidey slots 13.
nioiis 1'5 to come to rest' in the down-turned' When extremities of' the guide slots 13.
theV trunnions are in this position it'` will'- readily'be. seen tliat'the board'cannot be acidentally displacedi When the b'oarfl has been loweredE from the cabinet it may be swung to one side or the other upon the pivots l'andQT to'tlie desired position at which timey the 'thumb nuts 19`ma-y be tightened to clamp the reduced portion 10 of 'the board/tightly between the supporting. member 11i andY a .clamaing member 16 to thus rovide a rigid connection for the boaid to'pi'event its being accidentally displaced. is the boardis swung laterally it willf readily'be seen 'thatk the braces Q3 will swing with the board and simultaneouslylthe brace supportingV member 25 will be swungl on the pivot 2T. In order to insure even greater rigidity of' the board I'liave 'providedia thumb nut 29 for applica-- tion'A to the upper extremity. of' the pivot pin 2T. Vli'en the thumb nut 29'is. screwed'tiglitthe'J junction ofy the horizontal positionly against the top of the brace supporting member 25 it will readily be seen that the same is clamped tightly against the false bottom 28 to insure a iirm and rigid support for the braces 23.
When the work of ironing has been completed the board may readily be replaced within theI cabinet by. loosening the;y thumb nuts 29 and 19'. When this has been accomp'ii'slied'the board may be raised slightly and swung intopQStionidirectly in front of the open cabinet at which time the free end of the'boaid may be raised to permit the board supporting. member 14Ato slide downwardly along' theslbts-lf'topermit the board to be swung into the cabinet which housesthe same. f f
Itwill. readily be. seen from the foregoing A description thata simpleandeffctive means for mounting an ironing board'fin a wall.; cabinetfhas been provided'which W-ill'perinit the boardto be swung.laterally'i to any desiredfpositionto thus permit th'ejuse of aii'ill, sized' boardv within: limited spaces which would ordinarilyrequire the useof a smaller.
boardl'whicli is the source of considerable inconvenience and'botherto the user'.k l While the invention. has'beei described.
in considerable detalfin the-foregoingsspecif iications it is understood'thatvarious changesmay be made in'its''embodiment withouhde-y parting| from or sacriiic'aingJA anyof'th'e advantages hereinafter claimed; i
