DENNIS QUINLIVEN AND ROBERT N. LINEBARGER, OF UKIAH, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MINERS CANDLESTICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,362, dated August 22, 1876; application filed June 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DnNNIs QUINLIV'EN and ROBERT N. LINEBARGER, both of Ukiah, Mendocino county, State of California, have invented an Improved Miners Candlestick; and we do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use our said invention without further invention or experiment.
Our invention relates to a novel device for holding candles which are to be used in mines, tunnels, or other places in which it is desirable to support a light in various positions to show the work while the hands are free. It consists of a socket for holding the candle, and this socket has three prongs or hooks, so that it can be supported in any position where there is the least crevice, projection, or irregularity, as will be more fully explained by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our improved candlestick.
A is the socket, into which the candle is placed. .This socket may be made by stamping it out of sheet metal; and it has formed with it three projections, B O C. The two projections O are tapered to a point, and extend downward and backward from'the socket A, as shown.v The point B extends upward, and is bent into a backward curve, sothat it can be readily hooked upon any irregularity or projection which may be convenient.
By this constructionwe are enabled to attach the candlestick to any point or projection in the walls of the tunnel or mine, so that it will remain securely fixed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The candlestick or holder consisting of the socket A with its forked prongs G, and hook' B, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
