Description

A. S. HODGES.
SINK GUARD AND COVER COMBINED.
Patented Aug( 22, 1876.

' Inventor;
ADDISON S. HODGES, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SINK GUARD AND COVER COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,265, dated August 22, 1876; application filed January 28, 1876.
- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADDISON S. Honens, of Hyde Park, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sink Guard and Cover Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved sink guard and cover combined for the purpose of preventing odors from arising through the sink-pipe, and also for the purpose ofpreventing articles that are liable to clog up the pipe leading from the sink to escape through said pipe.
My invention consists of a metallic disk provided with a central opening that can be closed, when desired, by means of a cover that is hinged to the circular disk. One or more wires bent in a V form are cast to the metallic disk in such a manner as to project downward into the discharge-pipe from the sink, thus forming a guard to prevent matter large enough to clog the discharge'pipe from passing down through the guard. The advantage of this guard is that the wires that are projecting downward nearly in the saine direction as the flow of the discharge form a very slight obstruction to the proper discharge from the sink as compared with the ordinary guards having perforations or cross-bars, &c.
a The guard-wires are so arranged thatany matter that will pass freely down between it and the inside of the discharge-pipe will not be likely to obstruct the said discharge-pipe after it has passed by the guard. Another advantage of this invention is that it can so easily be removed from the sink and thoroughly cleaned in case it should become clogged up. 7
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a ground plan. Fig.2 represents a side view, and Fig. 3 represents a section on the line A B. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on'the drawings.
(t represents the metallic plate, having a central opening, I), as shown. The opening b can be-effectually closed by the cover 0, that is hinged at cl to the cover a by means of a pin cast into the metallic plate a. The cover 0 is shown as leaving the opening I) unobstructed in Fig. 1. Dotted lines in the same figure show the cover closing the opening b. V-shaped bent wires e 6, one or more, are placed in the mold in which the cast metal is run to form the plate a, and in this manner made to form, as it were, one single piece with the said plate a.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The combination of the plate a with its perforation b and movable cover 0, and one or more V-shaped wires, 6 e, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADDISON S. HODGES. Witnesses:
