UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRANK I. BLACK, 0F KINGS MILLS, OHIO;
STRAINER FOR WATER-FIRES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1y 28, 1914, Application filed. April 26, 1913. Serial No. 763,879. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. BLACK,
This invention relates to strainers for water pipes and more particularly to that class which is adapted to prevent the accumulation of debris thereon, an object of the invention being the provision of registering strainers which are arranged on the interior of a casing, the strainers comprising transverse bars arranged at an inclination therein so that the leaves etc, will be automatically carried through an exit in the front of the casing, thereby preventing the clogging of the same as has hertofore been the case in the use of wire meshingetce or when the strainers were arranged'horizontally within a casing.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of thisspecification wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device showing the exit openings in the front of the casing and the arrangement of the strainers therein; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig.
1 showing the manner in which the strainers are secured in the casing; and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1. I
In the drawings wherein is shown the preferred form of my invention the numeral 5 indicates an inlet pipe which may be from the roof of a house or any other place from which water is drained and is secured to the cap 6. A casing 7 is providedwhich is formed of a single piece of metal and is provided with a double rear wall by the folding over of the opposite ends 8 and 9 respectively thereof. Exit openings 10 and 11 are formed in the front face of the casing 7 and have flanges 12 bent inwardly at an obtuse angle to the face thereof which are adapted for the reception of the one end of wall and the outer wall 9. The walls 8 and 9 are'held in close proximity to each other through the medium of the cap 6, on the up per end of the casing and a cap 15 on the lower end of the casing, the said cap 15 having an outlet pipe 16 extended therethrough the same as the pipe 5' through the cap 6. Said bars 13 and 14 comprise the upper and lower strainers respectively.
The strainer 13 which comprises a plurality of bars arranged parallelly in the casing in spaced relation to each other and being inclined so that the debris or foreign through the innermost of the rear walls 8 v and bent downwardlybetween said inner matter which comes through the pipe 5' will be caught thereon and carried through the opening 10 in the front of the casing. The strainer 14: is identical inevery respect with the strainer 13. except that the barsv of the former are arranged in close proximity to each other so that the smaller particles which pass through the bars 13 which comprise the upper strainer will be caught and carried through the exit 11 in the lower end of the casing. I
The greatest stress is to be laid on the fact that the casing is made of a single piece l of metal having a double rear wall so that, the one end of the bars may be securely held therebetween and the opposite end secured to the inwardly extending flange 12, the said bars to be inclined so that the accumulation of debris will be reduced to a minimum.
Another feature which this invention contemplates is the arranging of the parallel bars so that the finer particles may be caught I and automatically carried therefrom, which has been found to be impossible with wire meshing and many other expedients which have been "used for this purpose, as leaves etc., have a tendency tobe caught inthe small rectangles of wire mesh thereby clogging the strainer and preventing the free passage of water therethrough.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred em bodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing anv of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention What I claim as newand desire to Se.- cure by Letters Patent is i A device of the character described including a casing, said casing comprising a sheet of metal, the opposite ends of which. are overlapped to provide a double rear wall, strainers arranged in said casing, one end of each of which is secured to the front wall of said casing, and the opposite end there- 10 of engaged between the rear Walls, caps arranged on the. onposite ends of said casing for holdlng sald rear Walls 1n engagement with sa d strainers, and adapted for en" H. 'H. MGFERREN, Orro EUYLERT.
