Description
May 20, 1930. P. VAN HORNE DRAINAGE CULVERT Filed March 11, 1927 amnion V4/VA 02/m'.
fizzy Patented May 20, 1930 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PERRY VAN HORNE, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CANTON O'U'LVERT AND SILO COMPANY, OF CANTON, OHIO, ACORPORATION OF OHIO DRAINAGE CULVERT Application filed March 11, 1927. Serial No. 174,538.
This invention relates to a drainage culvert.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a drainage culvert having openings therein, which are peculiarly adapted to assistv in efiective soil or underground drainage.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drainage culvert having novel struckout, downwardly deflected tongues disposed Fig. 1 1s a side elevatlon, partly in sectlon,
of a drainage culvert embodying the novel elements of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the culvert taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showlng one of the drainage openings with its asso-- ciated depending tongue.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is a drainage culvert, of a type well known in the art, formed of galvanized sheet metal in a well known manner, and having alternating crests 2 and valleys 3. It is to be understood however that the invention may readily be adapted to the ordinary straightwalled, cylindrical shell type of culvert- When in situ, the culvert occupies a position similar to that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawm Tongues 1 are struck out from theculvert after the latter has been formed, and as shown in Fig. 2, these tongues are deflected in one direction on one side of the culvert, and in the opposite direction on the other side of the culvert. The tongues are approximately concentric with the culvert proper, and are spaced from the body of the culvert by means of integral shoulder portions 5.
The striking out of the tongues 4, leaves 50 openings 6 thereunder, through which water and other fluids are adapted to flow, and to be carried off by the culvert.
The tongues and openings preferably lie in the valleys of the corrugations, but it is to be understood that they may be placed in the crests thereof, without departing from the scope of the invention.
It will be readily seen that the tongues 4 assist in preventing dirt and silt from entering the openings in the culvert, but do not prevent water and other fluids being drained, from entering the culvert. This feature is of especial importance in underground drainage, since the ordinary type of drainage culvert having only perforations in the sidesthereof, soon become clogged with dirt and silt, and cease to function properly.
Claim: I
A corrugated cylindrical drainage culvert having drainage openings in the valleys of the corrugations thereof, and struck out tongues disposed over said openings, said tongues being substantially concentric with the body of the culvert, and being connected to the body of the culvert by means of shoulder portions which are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the culvert.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
PERRY VAN HORNE.
