ruLiUs HQSOHLAFLY,
` .'Specication of Letters llatent. Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
No. soeces.
' Application filed 'July 22, 1908. Serial No. 444,724.
To all whom it may concern.' Be it known that I, JULIUs- H. SCHLAFLY, a citizen of the United States, residing atCanton, the countyv of Stark` and StateV of Ohio,
orushin o r collapsing of the pipe. It is also well understood that provision must be made for proper drainage so that there can be no accumulation of sediment by reason of the corrugations 3 formed in the sections. This obj-ect is brought about by forming a smooth or non-corrugated part 4, which smooth or non-corru ated part is to be located intermediate t e side corrugations 3, said non-f corrugated or smooth portion to be located .5 so that it. will be at the extreme bottom ofthe pipe, over which and upon which smooth or non-corrugated part or surface water and sediment are free to pass between the lower or adjacent ends of the corrugations.
.By forming corrugations -as shown and spacing their inner ends a short distance from each other suilicient ri idity will be maintained in the sections so that when they are placed in position to form a culvert or pipe, they will have sufficient stren th to resist crushing force. By corrugating t e pipe sections and at the same time forming a ortion'of the inner surface of said corrugatlons smooth, the same advantage is accomplished by the use of com arative thin sheet metal, thereby reducing t e expense and at the same time maintaining the same advantages that are brought about .by the use of heavy and expensive pipe section. In Fig. f1 a cylin- .drlcal sectionis shown, which section constitutes the entire pipe without flanges and the sections connecte :together at their ends to .produce a culvert or system of pipe of the desired len th.
' 'It wil be understood that the various sections re ardless of their speciiic construction may e connected togther by suitable rivets or their equivalents. l
Having fully described my invention what 95 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is` v 1. A pipe section provided with a plain bottom and corrugated integral portions, upistantially as' and for the purpose speci.- 100 2; As an improved article of manufacture, a pipe section having a plain portion intermedlate its edges and provided with corrugations, said corrugations terminating at 105 their inner ends adjacent the plain portion, ustantially. as and for, the purpose specii l 3. In a pipe oftheljclass described,' the combinatiom of pipe seetions having smooth4 110 have invented a new and luseful Culvert, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention has for its object to provide a corrugated sheet metal pipe especially designed for drainage purposes, which iples and sections of plpes are more `spec used in the constructions of culverts, but 1t will be understood that the Vpurpose of the present invention can be carrled out without any'speciiic use, except Where drainage is require Another object of the invention is to provide suihcient strength without employing heavy'` and eX ensive pipe and at the same time provide or perfect drainage.
hese Objects are accomplished vtogether with a further purposeof providing means whereby the sheets or sectlons or parts can be nested for ship ing and storage.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is alperspective view showing a number of mem ers Or'sections connected to ether illustrating one member detached. 'g2 is aview showing a number of culvert sections nested. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a portion ofl the culvert proper in section. Fig. 4 is an end view showing a pi e section formed without iianges but embo ying the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 re resents the culvert members or sections w en .formed semi-circular or practically 'so which members or sections' are formed of any desired size and when formed to producesub-v stantiallyone-half of the pipe proper some means should be rovided whereby the top and bottom mem ers may be connected together; but the' method of connecting the top and bottom sections forms no s eciic part ofthe present invention, as it will he understood that the objects and purposes can be carried out by forming the pipe proper in sections withouty flanges of any description. 50 This construction being clearly shown in Fig.
4. It is well `understood that .a -certain amount of rigidity is required so that when the. various sections going to makeup a pipev are properly arranged with reference to each 55 'othei` and placed in position there will be no y the corrugations,'substantially es and for members, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. f culvert or ipe consistin each sectcn provi( ed with attac vling flanges, seid sections provided with corrugations and non-corrugated portions, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l4 8. A culvert consisting of' sections, each I'section provided with lateral fleng'cs und lthe fie-nges adapted to be connected to 'l bottoms and integral corrugated portions@ substantially as and for the purpose speci- 4. A series of pipe sections or parts, said l sections or parts provided with corrugated and non-corrugated surfaces, said non-cori rugeted surfaces located et the bottoms of i the purpose specified.
5. As an improved article of manufacture, a culvert or pipe section or member constructed of metal and providedwitb flanges i andcorrugations, the inner ends of seid corrugetions spaced from each other, subs'tentla ly-as and for the purpose specified.
6. A culvert or pipe consisting of a series of sections or members, seid sections or members provided with lateral flanges end the flanges adapted to be connected together and the sections provided with circumferential conugations formed of e. length less then the extreme Width of the sections or getlier, seid sections getions end non-corrugated bottoms located between the lower inner ends of the corru` getions, substantially as and for the pur pose specified.
iii-testimony that l claim the above, l. lleve hereuntosubserilocd my naine' in the presence of two witnesses.
