This invention relates Agenerally tov endless .conveyers and' more' particularlyto 'paint guards or housings for such conveyers';`
v Heretofo're'it has been customary especial'-V ly-,cllu'ring'g thealssembly .of ythe chassis of auto-kk mo'bi'les',to:apply paintto: the framework in a Afine 1spray v'at a station,4 along the assembly line. .That partiof. .the spray which1 doesnot fall upon the. frame Work comes into contact with` the conveyer/xchain's and rollers Vupon vwhich rthe chaSSjistraVelS, Agettingzinto? the 'chain joints, rollers and ltracksin such quantities that it is notA long `before the parts .of the conveyer fail-.to function properly. vBecause lof the.l sticky condition of the-paint and the t tendencyto. dryqui'ckly lone eoatafter anf other is built up Vupon the eonyeye-ry with the result that .excessive vloads are builtupfadding to thechainestress together with .stresses on A`tliedrivingV machinery. f results in frequent breakdowns, thereby v causing great,
losses in product-ion,Y Y
' "With :thefpresent invention .these objectionable features :are entine'lygeliniinated asy I provide a paint guard or casing which completely. seals the Leonveyer chains .and associated y.parts from lthe rpaint spray, thereby preventing any serious damage thereto, as has heretofore been the'case.
Further objects ofthe inventionreside in the novel features ofr construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as morev fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings: v p y -Fi'gure l is a side elevation ofV myinvenftion with a portion of theprotective casing broken away; Y, f
n Figure 2 is a section .takenk on 'lineY2-2 of i Fi ure l. '#49,
eferring now to the drawingsinwhich like characters of reference indicate rlike parts, the numeral v1 designates an endless conveyer and 2 a/paint guard or housing enclosing and supporting fsaid conveyer. As shown this housing is divided into upper and lower sections 3 and 4 respectively, by means @of a plate 5 which supports the-rails 6 upon which the upper portion ofthe conveyerl travels,
The upper section 3 vis provi-ded with Vside wallsy 7, :top walls'` 8 and do-wnwardlyV extend?` jingflanges 39 A spaced a ','substant-,ial distance' apart from each .other so yas to yform a central longitudinally' extending open r space L@l0 bordered by a pai-r Tof `longtudina'll-y extending, housingsv t1.1v and 1524 y These housilngs rlare vadapted to acommodatethe conveyerchains A13 which' "for the most vpart;are made of stand f ard@ links 114. At .intervals ho-Wever, therev 1 are provided attachment members y'115'ineacfli chaifn lfor supporting trough-shaped cross erally extending arms L9/Which are adapted tov be lse'curedto 'thefattachment' members- 1,5y
within :the .casings ill' andl2; YEaCNmemfber l5 comprises a substantially U-s'haped memsecured an'l axlej 21, f v"Sl-o -one rend] of this aXfle isyseeured a rol-ler 22 for supporting the 'conveyer upon `7the rail 6,while-the'otherferidof the .axle is journaledin one of' the lsicjle'iwalls of; theycross bar 16; 'I` husy vthenside portions 'of each `erossbarV are doubly secured to lone y' VA.of theIl-inlgsl forfproducling strong and ri-gid `connection between the several parts.
Nt-r,
f W'hille any-:type of :articlemaybe carried by e the eonveyer 1,in the present-instance I'have provided means for supportingthechassisgof L automobile by `the Aff-ront and'1 rean'axles, thereof. 'For:suppora-tingl therear axle, there` is provided agp ai-"rof the attachment members' vl5V each conveyer chain, Vthisy ofcourse in'- cludinga pai-r ofthe-.cross Vbarslb. As shown,
fapai'rof upstanding supports- 23 Vare posi? tioned lonvgitudinfallyofthe conveyer andere provided 'with ibase portions 23Iadapted to' f *Itfistherefore necessary to prov-ide only one crossr bar for the front-y axle ofthe chassis rest upon `the v:base portions 117 of the cross j Y* l bars lfa'ndare -seciired'-theretogin anyV sui-tf" and of course there Will be no need for the positioning members 24 as those which are provided for the rear axle will be suiiicient to hold the chassis in place upon the conveyer.
From the foregoing it Will be app arent that all of the Working parts of the conveyer are protected against ,the paint spray by the housings l1 and l2. However, in order to provide additional protection, I secure the members 25 to the plate 5 and extend the flanges 9 far enough down Within the cross bars so as to overlap these members 25 and thereby doubly insure against any entrance of the paint tothe conveyer parts.
The conveyer l may be of any convenient length and any number of pairs of attachment members l5 may be provided as is found necessary for carrying and supporting the chassis frames. As is also apparent diil'erent types of supports 23 may be provided for carrying different articles to be painted.
The housings 11 and l2 are shown as consisting of channel-shaped members secured to the side Walls of the upper section 3, but it desirable they may be integrally connected to the Walls 7. Likewise the cross bars 16 are shown as being composed of separate sections and they may be provided with vertically projecting portions 27 extending` from the outside edges thereof.
It is of course understood that after the chassis or other articles have been disposed of, the conveyer is returned through the lower section 4. As shown rails 26 are provided upon Which the rollers 22 are supported and the Whole conveyer upon its return trip is protected from the paint spray by means of the side Walls of the` lower section l which are secured to the flooring of a building in any suitable manner.
l/Vhile it is believed th at from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of my invention Will be readily understood, I desire to have it understood, that I donot limit myself .to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of the claims.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a conveyer, the combination with spaced longitudinally extending chains including substantially U-shaped attachment members, trough-shaped cross bars provided with laterally projecting arms extending from the Walls thereotl and adapted to be secured to the base portions of said U- shaped attachment members, axles extending through said attachment members and cross bars, and rollers upon said axles.
2. In a conveyer, the combination with spaced longitudinally extending chains including attachment members, cross bars carried by saidchains, axles extending through said attachment members and cross bars and rollers upon said axles.
Leiaiiz 3. In a conveyer, the combination With a chain having a channelshaped attachment member, of a Work supporting b-ar having a portion secured to the base of said attachment member, and a portion extending at the side thereof, an axle extending through said attachment member and the portion of said bar at the side thereof, a track, and a wheel upon said axle and running upon said track.
Il. In a conveyer, the combination of spaced longitudinally extending chains including attachment members, a Werl; supporting cross bar secured to said attachment members, axles extending through said attachment members and cross bar, and rollers mounted upon said axles. o
5. In a conveyer, the combination oi' spaced longitudinally extending chains including attachment members, cross bars having their end portions secured to said attachment members and their intermediate portions provided With Work supporting means, axles ez-:tending through said attachment members and cross bars, rollers mounted upon said axles, and longitudinally extending casings enclosing said ccnveyer chains, and the end portions oit said cross bars.
In a conveyor, the combination of spaced longitudinally extending chains, cross bars carried by said chains, axles extending through said chains and cross bars, and rollers mounted upon said axles.
7. In a conveyer, the combination of spaced longitudinally extending chains, Work supporting' cross bars carried by said chains, axles extending through said chains and cross bars, rollers mounted upon said axles, and longitudinally extending casings enclosing said chains, rollers and the end portions of said cross bars.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
