IMPROVEMENT IN SKIRT-ELEVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181.018, dated August 15, 1876; application filed January 29, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMOS W. THOMAS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt- Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a broken perspective, showing the manner of doubling and fastening the waistband, so as to cause the skirt to draw toward the middle.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple and cheaply-constructed dress-eleva tor, comprising a waistband, two drawingcords, guided in tubes in said Waistband, each of said drawing-cords diverging to form two or more attaching-cords or pendants of unequal length.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates a waistband, of cheap textile material, terminating in front in a strap and buckle, A. B B are tubes, of spiral wire or other suitable material, sewed in or otherwise attached to said waistband. Said tubes ascend vertically from points on either side of the middle of the back of the bands, curving until they are in a horizontal plane, and passing around toward the front, so that the drawing-cords G O, which pass through them, will issue within convenient reach of the wearers hands. Said drawing-cords, below the waistband, diverge to form, or are attached to. pendent cords D D, of unequal length. These pendants terminate in safety-pins d d, for attachment to the skirt.

By drawing upon either of the cords 0 one side of the skirt will be raised; to raise the entire back portion of the skirt both cords must be drawn upon.

To cause the skirt to draw to the middle, the vertical portions of the tubes B should be brought close together. This may be done by doubling and pinning the waistband, or by the employment of an adjusting-cord in the eyelets a a, as shown in Fig. 2. When the waistband is thus double, it both the drawing-cords O D be knotted or tied together below it, by pulling on either one of said cords the whole skirt may be raised.

What I claim as my invention is- As a new article of manufacture, the skirtelevator herein described, consisting of the waistband A,curved guiding-tubes B B, drawing-cords O O, and pendants l) D, of unequal length, terminating in attaching-pins d, the several parts being constructed and combined substantially as shown and described.
