Description

T. THORN.
SASH-FASTENER.
.180,95 Patented Au .8,1876. No WW-J- Figi Q. mmmms UNITED STATES PATENT ,OFFICE- THEODORE THORN, OF ST. CLAIR, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 180,959, dated August 8, 1876; application filed June 28, 1876.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoEE THoRN, of St. Clair, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a window-sash lock, in which a box and latch-bar are used, and combined with a pin and spring, and a grooved sash having recesses, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and delinitely claimed.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is front elevation. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the frame with the sashes removed; and
Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of the various working parts.
A represents the window-frame; B, the upper, and C the lower, sash. The two vsashes are grooved longitudinally on both side edges to pass over metal boxes attached to the inner sidesof the window-frame. On one side is a box, D, struck up of sheet metal, or cast, to form two vertical parallel side bars, connected at the back by a series of cross-barstin the top and? bottom ones of which are screwholes, for the passage of screws, to fasten the box to the window-frame. In this box is placed a latch-bar, G, with pin or projection a at its upper end. This end of the bar G is v forced outward by means of a spring, E, passed over and under the cross-bars of the box, as shown. The lower end of the latch-bar G projects into a recess in the window-frame, and
in this recess is an arm, b, projecting upward from a horizontal shaft, d, which passes through the window-frame, and has a crank, handle, or key, H, on its front end. In the edge ofthe sash B, in the bottom of the groove thereon, are recesses x x corresponding in shape with the pin or lug a on the latch-bar G, said bar turning on a pin, z', as its fulcrum, as shown.
By turning the crank H downward the pin or arm b on the shaft d forces the lower end of the latch-bar outward, and draws back the upper end, so that the pin a will get out of its recess, and the sash can then be raised or lowered at will.
On the opposite side of the window-frame is a similar box, D', which simply contains a spring, I, to hold the sash against the latchbar.
The lower sash is held by precisely similar means, only that the box and latch-bar are reversed, and this latch-bar operated by an arm, b', extending downward from the shaft d.
It will thus be seen that by raising the crank the lower sash is unlocked, and by depressing the upper sash is unlocked.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the box D, the shaft d, having arms b b', the latch-bar G, having pin a, the spring E, and the recesses x x in the edge of the grooved sash, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE THORN.
Witnesses:
