UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE EDMUND J. MCCARTHY, OF RED HOOK, AND GASTON WILBUR, OF SAUGER- TIES, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIF E'PRESERVING CAPS AND CAPES COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 180,903, dated August 8, 1876; application filed J nne 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDMUND J. MCCAR- THY, of Red Book, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, and GASTON WIL- BUR, of Saugerties, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sleeping-Gap and Life-Preserver, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists in rnakin g a cap with a cape attached, with an inflatable space in each, so that either or both of the said spaces may be filled with air; the object being to furnish a cap which may answer the threefold purpose of protecting the wearer from cold and storm, of an air-pillow, to be used on the cars or in camp, and as a life-preserver.
Referring to the drawing, A is a cap, made from rubber or other material which is impervious to water or air, and is provided with an external envelope, at, which is 'also made from water-proof material, and is united to the band of the cap by an air-tight seam.
A tube, b having a suitable mouth-piece and valve, is attached to the cap, for inflating it while it is on the head. A cape B, is attached to the cap, and is made from waterproof material, and is double at 0, so that it may be inflated by blowing through the tube d, which is provided with a mouth-piece and valve.
It will be seen that when the cap and cape are not inflated it forms an ordinary stormcap, and that when it is inflated the confined air in the space which surrounds the head serves to protect the head from cold. It may be used as a pillow; it being filled with air gives it the required elasticity, and in case of emergency it can be conveniently used as a life-preserver, the contained air giving it the necessary buoyancy.
We do not confine ourselves to the exact form shown in the drawing, nor to the precise arrangement described in the specification, as the invention is capable of modification.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A combined cap and cape, made from materials which are impervious to water or air, each having an inflatable space, arranged substantially as shown and described.
