To a/,ZZ whom t may concern.' p
Be it known that L'vJosnrrr E. LOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Sinnggler, in the county of San Miguel and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Life-Preserv? ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates-to new and usefulv improvements in a life preserver.
. T he primary object of the invention is the provision of such al preserver which will entirely inclose the body.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of a preserver which may be easily attachedand detached.
A. still further object of the invention is a preserver having means secured thereto for keeping the body in a vertical position.
With thesel and other objects in view the invention o msists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a front elevation parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a detail of the head section, and Figi 3 is av fragmental vertical section through the joint for the head and body section.
ln the drawings, the letter A represents the body portion of the preserver and B the head portion, both of which are constructed of rubber or other suitable water proof inaterial. The 'body portion A is formed -with the legs 1, the feet 2 and arms 3 having .the fingers 4 at the end thereof. Secured around the leg portions 1 are the water bags 5 having an inlet opening closed by the cork 6 and an outlet opening closed by the cork 7. lThese bags 5 are adapted to be filled with water to keep the body in a vertical position Secured on the interior of the chest portion of the body A. are a plurality of metal reinforcing strips 8 to the top one of which are secured suspending straps 9 which are adapted to go over the shoulder of the wearer.
Secured to thetop of the' body portion A is a metal band -10 having the flange 11 through which rivets pass engaging the fab ric of the body portion for securing the band thereto. T he outersurface of the band 10 is threaded. A rubber gasket 12 is received around the band 10 to form a tight fit when the head section is in position.
The head section B has a window 13 formed therein and an air inlet tube 14 eX- tending froln the top thereof.
Secured to the bottoni edge of the head section B is a nietal band 15 which is bent to form a flange 16 by means of which it is attached tothe head section, the flanged eX- tension 17 which is interiorly threaded and the shoulders 18 between which is received a ring 19. A hinge Q0 is secured to the body portion and to the ring 19 for hingedly connecting the head section with the body seci tion. A plurality of pins or projections 21 are secured on the threaded extension 17 of the band 15 for turning the head section for vengaging thev threads on the extension 17 with thethreaded band 10 ofthe body section.
Secured to the vhead section is a signal horn 22 and a signal light 23, each of which may be operated in any manner and which4 forms no part of my invention. Secured within the body portion, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, is a pocket 24 in which might be placed food or other articles.
Having fully described the detail construction of the invention it is thought that the operation will be clear.. When not in Ause the preserver may be folded into a small space but when it is desired to use the same the head section B is swung upon the hinge 20 so that the person may enter the body portion, the feet entering v.the portions 2.0i' the body portion and the arms and fingers entering the portions 3 and 4'. The head section is then' swung into position over the head and by engaging the pins or projections 21 the head section, which is loosely mounted within the ring. 19, may be turned so that the threaded extension 17 engages the threaded band 10 of the body portion and theJ body portion and head portion are thereby held in locked position, the rubber gasket 12 forming a. water tight joint. Before enteringthewater the stopper 6 in the water bag 5 is removed and water allowed to enter the bag'. When the bags are filled the stopper is again inserted and when the person is in the water the bags will so weight the preserver as to hold it in a vertical position. :The metal reinforcing strips.
8 are of particular advantagemot only for holding the upper portion of the preserver in postion but to prevent pressure against In the daytime a signal might be given by means of they horn 22 and at night the light 23 might be used.
Having' 'fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is:
1. A life preset-ver comprising a body section having reinforcing strips secured thereto, straps secured to the said strips, a ring hingedly connected to the body portion, and a head portion loosely.mounted in the ring;` portion and adapted for vertical movement whereby it is secured to the body portion.
A life preserver comprising a body portionhaving a threaded band at the top thereof, a head section having' a threaded portion adapted to engage the threaded band of the body portion, a ringcarried by the threaded portion of the head section, and a hinge connecting the ring and body portion.
3. A life preserver `com|)risinggj a body portion having a threaded band secured thereto. a head section having a threaded portion secured thereto.` said threaded portion bent to form t-wo shoulders` a ring received on said threaded portion between the shoulders, and a hinge connecting the ring and body portion.
4. life preserver comprising a body portion having reinforcing bands secured thereto, -straps lsecured to the reinforcing bands; water bags secured to the body portion, a ring connected to the body portion. and a head section loosely mounted in the to the body portion.
ring and adapted for engagement with the body portion.
5, lite preserver comprising a body portion. a rinkgl hingedly secured to the body portion. and a head portion loosely mounted in the ring and adapted to engage with the body portion.
lite preserver comprising a body portion. a ring hingedly eonneeted to the body poi-tion. and a vhead portion loosely mounted in the ring portion and adapted t'or vertical movement whereby it is secured i'. lite preserver comprising al body portion having a threaded band secured to the top thereof. a 'ring secured to the body portion` and a head portion ha ving a threaded extension received within the' ring tor engagement with the body portion.
S. lil'e preserver portion. a threaded band secured to the top oi: the bodv portion` a head portion having a threaded extension having a groove therein` and a ring lsecured to the body portion and received in the groove ot the extension ot' the head portion` said ring being ot' less width than the groove.
