vApplication filed March 16, 1917.
To all fro/wm t may concern:
Be it known that l, .SAMUEL L. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport. in the county of` Niagara and State oi New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lite-Pie servers, of which the. following is a specilication.
My invention relates ,to improvements in life preserwrs, and it consists in the constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object or' my invention is to provide a life preserver formedinto the shape of a. garment or coat and being adapted to be inflated with air so that the coat may have the required buoyancy to support a person wearing the coat in the water.
Another object of the invention is-to provide a lite preserver formed as a coat and including a collar which when inflated with air will support the head ofthe person wearing the coat.
@ther objects and vadvantages of the invention will appear 'from thev following specilicatio-n, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the life preserver in use,
Fig. 2 is an elevation ot' the coat, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the air valve on the front of the coat.
ln carrying out my invention l provide a body portion of the coat as at 1. Joined with the body portion of the coat as at 2 is a collar indicated generally as at 3. The collar 3 is secured to the body portion 1 in such a manner that the air compartments within the collar 3, which will be herein-y after described are in communication with the air compartment of the body portion 1 of the coat.
The material of which the coat 1 is made is preferably rubberized canvas which will render the garment at once waterproof and air tight as well. The body portion 1 is of a double thickness of material which is securely stitched along the marginal edges as at t (see Fig. 3). Sleeves 5 are secured to the coat body l and are also double in "formation so that they too may be inflated Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 155,265.
with air. The sleeves 5 are short and arer coat 1, are inflated through an air valve 6.
which may be of any desired construction.
The coat is secured about the body of the.
wearer by suitable clasps 7. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that a region 8 at the back of the coat is closed in by the stitching 9. This region S is not adapted to be inilated with air as are the other portions of the coat but is left solid and may be filled with cork should it be so desired.
Attention is now directed to the peculiar formation ot the collar 3. lt will be seen that the collar 3 is formed into three peaks or triangular portions 107 11, 12. The collar 3 is also double in Jformation similarly as is the bod)7 1 of the coat so that it too may be inflated with air.
As previously stated the connection of the collar 3 with the body7 1 of the coat at 2, is such that when the body ol the coat is inflated, the collar will also be inflated.
Arranged centrally of the center peak 11 is a triangular or other shaped portion 13 which is isolated from the surrounding portions of the collar by suitable stitching. It will at once be apparent that the stitching with which the double portions of the collar are held together of the triangular portion 13 will form a channel in the central peak 11 which will become inilated with air and leave the central portion 13 depressed. The depressed portion 13 now becomes a rest for the back of the wearers head as indicated in Fig. 1.
The inflated side members 10 and 12 of the collar 3 will support the wearers head from the sides also as shown in Fig. l, and prevent the head from rolling over sidewise should the wearer faint, and thus cause him to drown.
The construction of the device having been described the manner of application is as follows:
The coat 1 is inflated through the medium of the valve 6 and laid aside for use in an emergency. Should it become necessary to don the coat, the coat is fastened about the body by the fastener '7. entering the Patented oct. so, ion;
Water the peaks l0, 1l, l2 of the eoiiar 9 Will naturally adjuet theniseheev in an upstanding position as shown in Fig. l.
It frequently happens 'that through fright or other causes the wearer of the life pre Serving Coat 'iiiiaint on entering the Water.
Vere it not for the provision of the side peaks l0 and 1Q, the head of the lwearer might roll. over into the Water whereupon the wearer Wouid heooine drowned. By proriding the upetanding side portions l0 and 12, accidental droiif'nine of the person is prevented and thus one o the moet e'iioient features oi the coat inanieets itself.
VYhiie the construction and arrangement of the device generally Athat oi' the preierred forni, obviously niodiieationrs therein may be inade Without departing` iroin the spirit of the invention or the. scope of the oiailne.
claimt-- l. A lite preeerver including a coat nodiT having sieei'ee, a eoiiar haring head supporting means attac-hed to the coat, and means for intiating the coat, Sieeves and collar.
2. n life preeerver including a coat body having- Sleeves, an inrlating Yahe on the Coat, a ooiiar attached to the coat having an iniatabie head Supporting peak, and a central depressed portion for receiiing the Vvearers head.
3i A life preserver including' an intiatable ooat body and sleeves, and an isoiated portion at the back of the Coat, a Clasp igor the Coat, an inflatable eoiiar attaehed to the Coat having side peaks in air eonnnunication With the coat bod;7 for Supporting a Wearers head and haring a recess or de-V pression for receiving the head.
G. life preserier inehiding a collar. nieans for securing said collar upon the Shoulders of the wearer, Said coiiarhaving an iniiatahie head Supportingl peak yand a central depressed portion for receiving the Wearers head. Y
T. A life preeerver including a collar, means for securing said collar upon the Shoulders'of the wearer said coiiar compris-y ing a pair of buoyant side peaks and a eentrai buoyant peak, said central peak haring a depression, whereby said peaks will 'it upon the Wearers head While said depree sion will receive the back of the wearere head, wherebyY the Wearers head will be Supported.
