Description

L. LEWIS.
COTTON-PRESS.
No.180,896. Patented Aug.8,1s7e.
NA PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHlNGTUN. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT GFEICE.
LEWIS LEWIS, OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 80,896, dated August 8, 1876; application Ilcd June 15, 1876;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS LEwIs, of Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented certain Improvements in Cotton-Presses, f which the following is a specification and'I do hereby declare that in the same iscontained a full, clear, and exact description of my said /inventiom ret'- ence being had to theaccompanying drawing, andto the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the mechanism for operating the follower, or that part of the press adapted to be moved in the compressing operation, as hereinafter fully describejd,vv
In the description my invention which follows, due reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, v`'forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View, partly in section, ot' a cotton-press embodying my invention Fig. 2, a transverse sectionof the same; and Fig. 3, a plan ot' a part of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures.
A Vrepresents the frame of the cotton-press, and B the box in which the cotton is packed, and through which the follower U passes in compressing the bale. D is a removable block, against which the cotton is forced. The follower Gis elevated in the compressing operation by means of levers E, which at their inner ends are pivoted to the follower, and at their outer ends pivoted to the sliding car- ,neet the said outer ends ot' the levers E with the carriages. The pinion H is secured to the vertical shaft K, which rests on a step, L, and is revolved by means of a pole or lever, M, to which a horse is yoked. The carriages being distended, and the follower at its lowest point, power applied to the pole or lever' M causes the pinion H to revolve and the carriages to be drawn together, thereby elevating the in- 11er ends of the levers E with the follower C. By the upward movement of the follower the cotton/is forced against the block D and compressed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the toothed sliding carriages F, operated as described, the rollers I, and the pins on which they revolve, the said pins serving also as the connections between the leversE and said carriages, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 19th day of April, A. D.
- LEWIS LEWIS. Witnesses:
