UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS S. GORRELL AND EDVARD M. TUBES, OF PITTSBURG, KANSAS.
HAY-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,007, dated April 10,1888.
Application filed Dcccmbcr, 1887. Serial No. 258,522.
To @ZZ whom, z'r may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS S. GORRELL and EDWARD M. Tunes, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hay-Presses, of which the following is a specitication.
Our invention relates to improvements in hay-presses; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate our invention, Figure l is a longitudinal section of our improved press. Fig. 2 is a plan view vof The same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the plunger, and Fig. 4 is an end view.
Referring to the drawings particularly by are extended past the sides at one end, and at this end crossbcams H are secured between the beams. To the sides ol these crossbeams we bolt thejournatboxes l, in which the ends of the fulcrum bolt or pin J have bearings. The sweep or operating-lever K is fulerumed on this bolt or pin J, and the said bolt or pin passes through the top of the press, a brace, L, extending from the upper end thereof to the sweep, as shown, to steady the movement of the saine. To the upper and lower sides of the sweep, at the inner end of the same, we secure the arms or plates M, which pass around the fulcruIn-pin and project inward beyond the inner end of the sweep.
N designates a pitman having its opposite ends pivoted, respectively, between the inner ends of the arms M and between the lugs O on the outer end ofthe plunger P. This pit man N is composed of the sockets Q, through which the pivot-pins are passed, and which are provided with the lateral projections R, and the rod S, having its ends tted in the said sockets. In order that the rod S may be rmly held in the sockets, we provide the longitudinal fasteningbars T, which are arranged parallel with the rod S, on opposite sides of the same, and have their opposite ends (No modei.i
secured rigidly to the lateral projections R of the sockets.
The plunger P is provided on its opposite sides with the outwardly-extended guide-rails U, which steady the motion of the plunger and serve to maintain said motion in a direct longitudinal line by bearing against the sides of the press.
Secured to the opposite sides of the press and to the posts are thc stop-bars V. These stop bars are secured at such a height as to be in the same horizontal plane as the sweep, and they project outward and toward the rear end ofthe press, so as to limit the movement of the sweep to the necessary degree byreason of the sweep contacting with the ends of thc bars, as will be readily understood.
In practice the hay is fed into the press in the usual manner and the plunger forced t-hercagainst to compress it by moving the sweep. The sweep is allowed onehalt' of a complete revolution, so that during each stroke itwill force the plunger in against the hay, compressing the same, and then withdraw it, leaving room for another quantity of hay.
It will be seenat once that our press is very simple, and our improved construction is such that the parts will be considerably strengthened, permitting the application of great power.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the press box, the plunger, the sweep provided with the arms M on its upper and lower sides, the sockets Q, pivoted to the plunger and between the arms M and having the projections R, the rod S, having its ends fitted in said sockets, and the sccuringrods arranged parallel with said rod S and having their ends secured rigidly to the projections It, substantially as set forth.
in testimony that we claim the foregoing as ourown we have hereto affixed our signatures iu presence ol' two witnesses.
THOMAS S. GORRELL. EDH/"ARD M. TUBES.
