Description

Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE .J' AMES D. LINDSAY, 0F W'HITING, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO'STANDARD OIL COMPANY, OF WHITING, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
romsn No Drawing.
This invention relates to polishes and particularly to a polish for automobile and other highly finished -surfaces.
The polish comprises water, mineral oil, 5 finely divided colloidal earthy material, an
abrasive and organic acids.
Any suitable mineral oil may be used. It is preferred to use a mineral oil such as straw oil together with a more viscous oil, such as a lubricating oil of viscosity about -85 sec. Saybolt at 100 F. It is preferred to use a highly treated or white oil since results are somewh at better than when a less treated oil is employed.
As the colloidal earthy material, wilkinite, bentonite, precipitated silicic acid or similar highly colloidal clay is preferred. As the abrasive it is preferred to use suitable earthy abrasive materials, such as infusorial earth, finely divided silica, or the like.
Various organic acids may be used such as oxalic, tartaric, acetic acid and other acids 'and hydroxy acids. It is, however, found that better results are obtained by using a mixture of oxalic and tartaric acids.
A polish according to the invention may suitably contain the following ingredients in the percentages by weight stated: Water 56 to 0.5%, infusorial earth 3 to 6%, oxalic acid 1 to 1.5% and tartaric acid 1 to 1.5%.
Application filed April 16, 1927. Serial No. 184,433.
I claim:
1. A polish comprising water, mineral oil, wilkinite, abrasive earth, oxalic acid and tartaric acid in such proportions as to adapt it for use on automobile and other highly polished surfaces.
2. Apolish comprising water, mineral seal oil, a heavy oil, wilkinite, 'infusorial earth, oxalic acid and tartaric acid in such proportons as to adapt it for use on automobile and other highly polished surfaces.
. 3. A polish comprising about 56 to 71% of sorial earth, 1 4% of oxalic acid, and 1 A% of tartaric acid.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand. and seal this sixth day of A ril, 1927.
- JAMES D. LIN SAY.
to 71%, mineral oil 23 to 36%, wilkinite 0.2
The following composition is a highly satisfactory polish:
Per cent Water 65 Mineral seal oil 19 White oil (Vis. 7 5 Saybolt at 100 F.) 9 Wilkinite Infusorial earth 3% Oxalic acid 1 A Tartaric acid 1% Although the present invention has been described in connectionwith certain ingredients and certain proportions, it is not intended that such details shall be'regarded as limitations upon the scope of the invention except in so far as they are included in the accompanying claims.
