UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK S. SHIRLEY, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-GLOBES WITH PRISMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 80,800, dated August 8, 1876; application filed November 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. SHIR- LEY, of New Bedford, Bristol county, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Gas Globes with Prisms, of which the following is a specification; reference being bad to the ac'com pan ying-drawings, forming part hereof.
My invention relates to the ornamentation of gas globes with depending prisms; and consists in a gas-globe having the said prisms hung upon thebase or lower edge thereof by means of hooks or links carrying the prisms looped through small openings formed in the globe along its lower edge, as hereinafter particularly set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation of a gas-globe ornamented with prisms according to my invention.
B is the gas-globe, of glass, as usually fabricated. -At the base of this globe, along the lower edge thereof, as shown, by means of suitable tools, I bore the small holes or openin gs 0, extending preferably through the glass of the globe. .The prisms, as shown at O, are suspended upon the fine wire hooks or links b. One end of these books is passed through one of the small openings 0, from the exterior to the interior of the globe, and the end is 'then bent down upon and against the surface of the edge of the globe on the inside.
The globe may now be mounted upon its supporting-bracket. By this arrangement I am enabled to give a highly ornamental appearance to the gas-fixture, and, at the same time, to permit the free access of the light to the pendent prisms, whereby their reflection and refraction of the light is greatly increased.
I am aware that gas globes have been heretofore ornamented with pendent prisms hooked upon a suitable flange or collar attached beneath the globe for that purpose. I do not claim this device, intending to limit my claim hereunder to the specific devices herein shown and described-that is to say, to a gasglobe having the pendent prisms suspended to the globe by metal links or hooks passed through openings formed in the base or lower edge of the globe.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The globe B, having the pendent prisms G suspended to the globe by the metal links b, hooked into the openings 0, formed in thelower edge of the globe, as described.
FREDERICK S. SHIRLEY.
