SASH HOLDERAND STARTER Filed Aug. 11, 1926 A TTORNEYS tion.
Patented May 26, 1931 warren STATES PATENT OFFICE ROY '1. AXE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, AS SIGNQR TO THE 0. M. EDWARDS COMPANY INC., OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK SASH HOLDER AND STARTER Application filed August 11, 1926. Serial No..128',554. V
This invention relates to sash holders, locks or latches having sash starting means as a plunger operating to press upon the window sill and start the sash out of its closed posi- It has for its object a particularly simple and compact construction or arrangement of the operating levers for the holding means and for the sash starter, whereby said levers are both grasped pinch-handle fashion 1 and move relatively to each other or toward each other until their movement is limited, and the movement of the sash starter handle is prevented so that it acts as a rigid handle until the sash lock is withdrawn, when both .15 act as a handle rigid with the casing of the device.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters represent corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a sash lock embodying my invention, the contiguous part interlocking of the sash starting plunger with its operating lever.
This sash starter and holder comprises,
generally, a detent for coacting with the sash to normally look the window from being raised, a sash starting plunger located to push against the sill of the window frame, operating members both arranged one above the other so that each moves toward the other during the operation thereof, said levers being arranged to be grasped pinch handle fashion.
The detent member may be of any suitable form, size and construction and that here shown is a separate part from its operating lever although in many instances the detent member is an integral partof its operating lever.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the detent member is shown as a sliding bolt 1, movable through a side wall of a recess 2, formed in the casing 3, which recess opens'throughthelower face of the casing. This bolt is guided in a passage in one side wall and has a stem 4: extending through a passage in the opposite side wall. A spring 5 encircles the stem and thrusts against the detent to force it outwardly into its locking position. The operating member 6 for the detent 1 is also mounted in the recess 2 and is here shown as an angle lever having abearing at its angle, which fits on a stud 7 projecting from the bottom of the recess 2, one arm of the lever extending through a side wall of the recess to the outside of the casing in position to be engaged by the hand of theoperator. The other arm of the lever extends upwardly and is interlocked with the detent 1 to transmit motion thereto and also to prevent axial displacement of the lever 6 off the stud 7 except by manipulation intended to so displace the lever 6..
The construction of the lever 6 and dctent 1 is shown in the patent of Edward F. ChaifeeNo. 1,567,571, dated December 29, 1925. I
8 designates the sash starter which is a plunger movable through the lower wall of the recess 2, it having a head 9 within the recess.
The spring 10 encircles the stem within the recess and thrusts upwardly on the head 9. This spring, however, may be omitted.
11 is the operating lever for the plunger, it having a bearing between its ends mounted on a stud 12 projecting from the bottom of the recess 2 similar to the stud 7. The inner arm 13 of this lever 11 overlies the head 9 of the plunger and the outer arm thereof extends through the side wall of the lever 2 below the lever 6 in position to be grasped pinch handle fashion therewith.
These levers 6 and ll normally diverge from each other.
The lever 11 or the inner arm 13 thereof and the plunger 8 are provided with interlever 11 off the stud 12, and as seen in Figure 4 the arm 13 of the lever 11 is formed with a depending lip 14L engaging a flattened side on the head 9 of the plunger 8. No means other than the interlocking feature is required to hold the lever in its assembled position. Also the passages in the side wall of the casing 3 through which the levers 6 and 11 extend to the outside of the casing, open through the rear edge of said casing, so that the levers are displaceable and removable from the casing by a rectilinear movement.
In operation the operator grasps both handles 6 and 11 and applies a pinching pressure thereto. As the end of the plunger 8 is against the sill and as the sash 1 is locked from upward movement by the detent 1, no movement of the lever 11 takes place until after the lever 6 has been operated to withdraw the detent 1 when the lever 11 moves upwardly to cause the sash starter and plunger 8 to push downwardly on the sill and push the sash up. These movements of the lever take place without any thought on the part of the operator who merely grasps both handles, pinches them toward each other and lifts. The movement of the levers toward each other is limited by the levers engaging each other.
What I claim is 1- 1. A sash holder and starter comprising a detent member and a starter member, handles for operating said members movable in opposite directions toward each other and arranged to be grasped pinch handle fash- 1011.
2. A sash holder and starter comprising a detent member, a starter member, levers for actuating said members, the levers being arranged one above the other in relation to be grasped pinch handle fashion, and movable toward each other on their pivots.
3. A sash holder and starter comprising a casing formed with a recess opening through its rear face, and having a passage in one edge wall thereof, a detent movable through said passage to the outside of the casing, a lever connected to the detent to actuate it, a sash starting plunger movable through the lower wall of the recess, a lever pivoted in the recess and having an arm pressing against the upper end of the plunger, the levers being arranged one above the other in position to be grasped pinch handle fashion.
l. A sash starter comprising a casing, a sash starter member movable through the lower wall of the casing, a stud projecting from the bottom of the casing, a lever having a bearing on the stud and having one arm thereof acting on the starter member, the starter member and the portion of the arm of the lever coacting therewith having interlocking parts preventing axial displace ment of the lever off the stud.
5. A sash starter comprising a casing, a stud projecting from the portion of the easing, a sash starter plunger movable through the lower wall of the casing, a lever having a bearing on the stud and having one arm thereof pressing against the head of the plunger, the plunger head and the portion of the arm of the lever coacting therewith having interlocking parts preventing axial displacement of the lever off the stud.
6. A sash starter comprising a casing, a sash starter plunger movable through the lower wall of the casing, a finger lever pivoted in the casing and displaceable by an axial movement, the lever having one arm thereof pressing against the head of the plunger, the plunger head and the portion of the arm of the lever coacting therewith having interlocking parts, arranged to prevent such axial displacement.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and in the State of New York, this 6th day of August, 1926.
ROY T. AXE.
