53 simplify mechanism of this character and to all render it more certain and accurate in the performance of its function. F or the attainment of this object the invention provides a sheet registering mechanism in which the number of operating elements is reduced to a minimum while retaining and enhancing the precision of action of more complicated mechanisms.
A more particular object of the invention is to provide a side register mechanism which is adapted to be installed at either side of a feed board without alteration.
Other specific objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detail description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of the sheet registering mechanism embodying the invention; 7
Figure 2 is a plan view;
Figure 3 is a sectional View showing the mechanism in end elevation;
Figure l is a section on line 4% of Fig. 2
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Figure 7 is a perspective detail; and
Figure -8 is a perspective view of the register plate.
The mechanism comprises, in general, a pull guide mounted to reciprocate transversely of the feed board adjacent the cylinder of a press, or other sheet impression means; a register plate against which the sheets are shifted by the pull guide, and cam mechanism associated with the register plate and adapted to control the opening and closing of the pull guide finger. j
The pull guide is carried by a bracket 10 adjustably fixed on a bar 11 which extends transversely of the feed board and is mounted to reciprocate longitudinally in proper timed relation to the operation of the feeder and press. So far as the present invention is concerned, any suitable mechanism may be used for reciprocating the bar 11, such for exampie as shown in my Patent No. 1,683,195 granted September l, 1928.
rotatable with respect to the pin. Thesleeve' is pressed down'on barrel 21 by a spring 27 which ISCOIDPIQSSQCl agamst the upper end of theslecve and the head of pin 23, and
the sleeve is normally locked from rotation with respect to the barrel by engagement of detents 28 on the barrel with notches in the In order to adjust the tension of spring 24, the sleeve 26 is raised against the actionfof spring27 until the detents 28 are disengaged from the notches, whereupon the sleeve is turned to'rotate the pin 23 and raise or lower it, as the case may be, the detents being again seated in the notches after the adjustment has been made.
The register plate is mounted on a bracket 30 secured to a stationary bar 31 arranged parallel and adjacent to the bar 11, between a the latter and the delivery end of the feed board. This bracket is secured to the bar by ascrew bolt 32 which screws into-the 1 barand asses throu h a lon itudinal slot P e s 33 in the foot of the bracket and is provided with awasher 34, whereby the bracket is adapted to be clamped in adjusted positions, on the bar. The bracket is formed with mar- 'ginal vertical flanges 35' (Fig. 3) extending downwardly and adapted to engage the'upper side edges of the bar 81, whereby lateral movements of the bracket with respect to the bar are prevented.
(Fig. 5) which has a cylindrical knurled head. "This headprovides a seat against which the register plate '3? is yieldingly held by a spring pressed pin 88, which is slidably mounted 111 an axial bore of screw 36. The
register plate is formed with a circular aperture 39 (Fig. 8) fitting around-a cyli-n of'screw 35 and bears at its outer end against 1 7 each sheet when the sheet reaches a predetermined pos1t10n-on the board- Durlng the 111-.

and rear sides of the bracket. integrally formed with each sine of this yoke is a depending cam 50, 50', 7) adapted to engage one of the shoulders 22, 22 of arm 17 and cause the latter to be moved about its pivot 19 when the pull guide is moved inwardly to engage a sheet.
Itwill be observed that thereare two cams 50, 50, one on each side of bracket 30; and
two shoulders 22, 22', oneon each side of arm 17. Only one shoulder and its co-actmg cam, however, is ut1l1zed after themechanisrn has been posltloned at one side or the other of thefeed board, andthe purpose of providing two pairs is to adapt the mechanism for location at either side of the feed board. As shown, the mechanism is located at the right hand side of the board, with reference to one facing the cylinder of the press, and in this position the cam 50 is adapted to co-act with the shoulder 22. lVithout alterpressing against the small head 44; of pin 38, to bringfthe reduced portion 51-"of the pin in register with the slot 46 inthe plate, whereupon the plate can be withdrawn up- .wardly, reversed by turning it through an angle of 180? about a vertical axis lying in its own plane, and then replaced. It is necessary to thus reverse the plate in order that it may extend acrossthe path of the pull fingers, the plate being slotted, as shown, to
provide a passage for said fingers.
Briefly, the operation 'ofthemechamsm 1s as follows: Bar 11, on which the pull guide is mounted, reciprocates in timed relation to the operations of the feeder and press to move the pull guide, inwardly into engagement with ward movement of the pull guide the upper surface of shoulder 22, which 1s 1ncl1ned to the-plane-of movement, comes lnto engagementwithn-the relativelystationary cam 50, I and the arm 1T-is thereby caused to rotate about pin 19 against the pressure of spring 24, raising the pull fingersf16 to permit the margin of the sheet to enterthe throat formed by these fingers with plate 15. When the sheet has fully entered thisthroat, the
