COPYHOLDER.
Application filed April 2, 1927. Serial N6. 180,396.-
My present invention relates to copyhold-' ers and particularly to copyholders of the kind used in connection with and for transcribingupon typewriters wherein the copy holding means is disposed at the rear of the typewriter andforwardly extending bracing and operatingnieans project-attire side of the machine. Such copyholders embody either a stationary copy-plate and a relatively movable line indicator which follows down the copy ora movable copying plate associated with a fixed line indicator. 'In either case the relative movement of the elements is effected with a step-by step movement through suitable actuating mechanism. The invention has for its object to provide for such copyholders a simple convenient and efficient regulating mechanism for controlling the length of the step taken by the actuating mechanism on each operation to adjust the line indication to conform with the spacing of the copy.
' To these and other ends the invention resides in certainimprovements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out inthe claims at the end of the specification;
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the'copyholder constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention- Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of a portion of thecopyholder support showing the front viewlo'f my improved stop mechanism;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the parts" shown in Figure 2 partially in'section on the lines 3 3 and 38 of Figure 2;
Figure e is a horizontal section on the line H of Figure 2; 3 A} Figure 5 is'a further enlargement in the same sectional plane of certain (parts shown in Figure '4; and j Figure 6 isla detail section on the line 6-6 of FigureQ.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
I have illustrated my invention in the resent instance and Will describe it as applied to the familiar type of copyholder em bodying the stationary line indicator and a movable copy-plate. Referring more par ticularly to Figure 1, 1' indicates the copyplate having a paperclip or clamp 2 at the top thereof and movable vertically upon guide rods 3 on an upright supporting frame 4.. The supporting frame, inthe present instance, consists of a plate embossed rear- .wardly at 5 and having forwardly extending flanges 6 at its edges. ,''It is secured at the bottom to a heavier reenforcing base plate 7 While the flange at the top forms a sliding bearing for a lifting rod 8 carried on the back of the copy-plate. A lifting clutch 9 carried by a reciprocatory clutch rod 10 engages the rod 8 above the frame while an independently supported holding clutch 11 engages the rod 8 below the frame. The clutch 9, as the clutch rod 1.0 is raised,
raises thecopy-plate and whileit is return- I ng to initial position the clutch 11 main- I tains the plate against retrogrademovement so that a step-by-step upward advance of the copy-plate past a stationary line indicator 12 disposed across its face and suitably sup ported by the frame 4 is eflected. When the clutch rod 10is abnormally depressed or lowered it releases both clutches and the plate falls to a lowermost position." It is shown in a partially raised position in the figures. The foregoing mechanism is well known in the prior art and my present invention is concerned with it only in a gen eral way for which reason the parts have been illustrated largely bydotted lines.
The frame and copy-plateare held erect at the rear of the typewriter by a forwardly extendingside arm 13 that lies at the side of the typewriter. Pivoted tothis arm at 14 is an operating lever 15 the forward'end of which is in the form of a handle or finger key 16 that projects for accessibility and convenience to the operator adjacent to the key board of the typewriter. The rear end of the operating lever 15 is operatively connected through a universal joint at 17 to the outer end of a relatively an'gularly disposed actuating lever 18 to which the lower end of the clutch rod 10 is pivoted at 19. This 210- Lil.
, rough adjustment il'or'lhe stop device hereof raising movement is limited by the stop mechanism of the present invention which Will novv be described in detail. Y
A side flange 6 of the supporting plate 4 is slotted at 21, 22 and The end of the actuating lever 18 projects through and is guided in the slot 21. Slidable in the angle between the flange and plate is an angular carriage plate 24 having rigidly secured thereto an exterior-1y and interiorly threaded stud 25 that projects through and is guided in the slot of the side flange. By means of a nut 26 having a knurled head the carriage may be lightened in position and held at any desired position of adjustment. This mechanism, so far described, constitutes a in-alter referred to.
actuating mechanism Pivotcd to the an ular carria e )late 2i by a shouldered rivet 27 (see Figure 6) is a stop plate 28 \vhichis also angular having a flange 29 portion of the carriage plate A depending arm St) on the stop plate terminates in a rubher or other suitable bu li'er 31 lying above and in the path of the actuating lever 18. The coarse adjustment of the carriage 2i above described advances or retracts the stop butter 31 in the the stop held retracted to a maximum extent on the carriage by a spring 32 hooked on to the latter at 33 and to the at 34. v
To provide a line adjustment of the stop and more accurately control the throw of the actuating lever 18 and the consequent line indicating movement With reference to the copy, the flange 29 ot' the stop plate is provided with a bearing socket binnpcd out therefrom and which engages and turns the inner end of a screw 36 extending through the stud 25 and terminating in another and preferably smaller knurled head 37 beyondthe knurled head 26. This constitutesa limiting contact for the stop plate 28 in its retracting pivotal inovei'i'ient under the influence of the spring 32, so that by loosening the screw the stop is retracted and by tightening the SUIQ'W it advanced.
Au upward and laterally turned extension 38 on the stop plate 28 provides an indicator SSprojecting through slot 23 in the flange 6 of the support and cooperating with a suitable scale 40 preferably of contrasting color, and, graduated at ll to correspond to standard s 'iacings ol lines on copy. By reference to thisimlicator and through the use of the described adjusting means, the may be set Without spacing in indicating stop plate trial to give desired the lines o'lthe copy. I The stop mechanism made in accordance With my invention adds greatly to the facility and accuracy of copyholder operation.
