IMPROVEMENT IN BOOKS AND COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,642, dated August 1, 1876; application filed June 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN L. ROBINSON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Manifolding Book, of which the following is a specifica-tion:

The object I have in view is to provide a book in pocket form, in which a facsimile of letters, telegrams, or other memoranda written in pencil may be retained for future reference.

The invention consists in removably attaching a book of tissue or manifold paper within a pair of covers, to one of which is secured a folding pad faced with impressionpaper, such as is used in making manifold copies.

Figure l is a perspective view, showing the book and pad opened out. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the pad inserted in the book preparatory to writing therein.

In the drawing, A represents a pair of covers, in the fold of which is secured a book, B, of thin tissue or manifold paper, in such a manner that when filled up it can be detached and replaced by another. C is a folding pad, hinged at one edge to one edge of the cover A, so that it can be folded into the" covers or book. The pad is faced on one side with a strip, D, of chemically-prepared impressionpaper, such as is used for making manifold copies, the strip D being secured in such a manner that when required it can be detached and replaced by another. This is done by opening the pad and folding in the ends of said paper then close the pad, thereby holding the strip D in place. Clips Ride on the inner edge of the stationary leaf may be used for slipping the edge of the other leaf under to insure the closing of the pad.

To use the 00k, open it and insert the pad under the fi st unwritten leaf; place the paper on which it is desired to write the memoranda over said leaf 5 write with a pencil; upon removing the paper a copy will be found on the leaf. or, place the pad under the second unwritten leaf, writing the memoranda on the first leaf, which can then be torn out, leaving a copy on the second leaf.

What I claim as my invention is- The combination, with the covers A of the removable book B, of thin paper and the folding pad C, faced with impression copying- 7 paper, substantially as described.
