Serial No. 377,106.
This invention relates to cinematograph films and the like and has as an object to provide a reinforcement for said films adapted to protect them from damage as they 5 are fed through a camera or projecting ma* chine.
Other and more specific objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cinematograph film having reinforcement strips attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. V
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the perforations.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detailed sectional 29 view showing the overlapping tongues.
Figure 5 is a similar view showing a single trailing tongue.
In an earlier Patent No. 1,674,528 issued to me June 19, 1928 I have described a reinforcement for cinematograph films comprising metal strips at the edges of the film, the said strips being secured thereto by means of tongues which are punched from the strip in forming the desired perforations therein, the said tongues being bent around the transverse edges of the film perforations to secure the reinforcing strip to the film.
As explained in the said patent, in order to prevent creeping of the strips with respect to the film, some of the tongues are bent forwardly, while others are bent rearwardly, and some measure of protection for the forwardly extending tongues was provided by the ends of the rearwardly extending tongues which extended into close proximity thereto.
I have now discovered ythat while films constructed in accordance with the disclosure of said patent are satisfactory for many tection than is provided in the construction disclosed in the said patent.
verse edge of the film perforation and thus form rearwardly extending or trailing tongues. At intervals, however, as for example, at every fourth perforation, as illustrated in the drawings, one of the tongues V4 is bent around the forward transverse edge of the film perforation, thus forming a forjwardly extending clinching tongue which serves to prevent creeping of the strips with respect to the lm.
Inthe constructiondescribed inthe patent, the tongues were pressed around the edges of the perforations in such manner that a small space was left between the edge of the perforation and the inside of the tongue. In the present construction, in order, to provide for the desired overlapping of the tongues, this space is omitted and the tongues are folded tightly around the edges of the film perforations, thus providing sufficient length for those portions of the tongue which are folded under to enable the 'tongues to overlap a substantial distance.
v I have also found it expedient, in punch ing the reinforcing strip to provide the desired perforations, to cut away a small portion of the film along the edge of the perforation immediately beneath the leading edge of the tongue, thus in effect, enlarging Q the film perforation to a slight degree. This accomplishes two purposes. It enlarges the film perforation sufficiently so that the size ofthe finished perforation in the reinforcing strip is substantially the same as the original size ofthe film perforation, part of the film perforation having been filled by the thickness of the metal tongue at the point of bending. In the second place, it provides additional length for the metal si). Y
tongue which is folded under and thus provides additional overlapping. y
As will be apparent, as the film thus reinforced is fed through a camera or projecting machine, all ofthe exposed tongues are trailing tongues, all of the forwardly extending 'tongues being covered and protcctedv by rearwardly extending tongues, and there is thus'no possibility for catching on projecting parts of the machine.
t will be understeodthat'ther invention may be variously modified and embodied Within the scope of the subjoined claims:
I claim as my invention: j
l. The combination with a cinematograph film having driving Wheel perforations arranged in a longitudinal line adjacent the edge of the film, ofk a reinforcing strip extending longitudinally of the film having perforations registering with the perforations in the film, tongues secured to said reinforcing strip and extending through said filmperforations to secure said strip to said film, some of said tongues being bent rearwardly, While others are bent forwardly, the ends of the forwardly bent tongues being extended beneath the ends ofsaid yrearwardly bent tongues in position to be protected thereby in passing through a camera or projecting machine. v
2. The combination With a cinematograph film having driving Wheel perforations arranged in a longitudinal line adjacent the edge of the film, of a reinforcing strip extending longitudinally of the film having perforations registering With the perforations in the film, tongues formed integrally Withr said reinforcingV strip from the material punchedout to form said perforations,
vsome of said tongues being bent around the j rear transverse edges of said film perforan tions While others are bent around the front f f transverse edges thereof, the ends of the latter tongues extending under the ends of the former in position to be protected thereby.
.l The combination with a cinematograph film having driving Wheel perforations artions in the film, tongues secured to said reinforcing strip and extending through said film perforations to secure said strip to said film, some of said tongues being trailing tongues While others are forwardly projecting tongues, the ends of all of said for-l 4.-.
