Description
ETTEE STATES LAZARUS LOESER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-TIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 180,607, dated August 1, 1876; application filed June 5, 1876. l
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAzARUs LoEsER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tips for Boots and Shoes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing', in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a shoe provided with one of my tips. Fig. 2 is an `inverted plan of the tip detached. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a tip for boots or shoes, which is made of leather or other flexible material, and provided in its bottom edge with a strengthening-piece, of wire or other flexible material, secured in a pocket around the edge of the tip, the ends of which form points or loops for attaching the tip to a boot or shoe.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my tip, which is, by preference, made of leather, but which may be made of any other equivalent flexible material. The bottom edge of this tip is doubled over, so as to form a pocket for the reception of a strengthening-piece, B,
Vof wire, cord, or other equivalent material.
In practice I prefer to use steel wire for this purpose, and the ends of this wire are bent inward, as shown in Fig. 2, and made to form sharp points a a.
If I use a cord for the strengthening-piece B, I provide this cord with small loops at its ends.
If one of my tips is to be attached to a boot or shoe, it is brought inthe required position,
the strengthening-piece being placed into the joint between the upper and the sole, and then the points a t are pressed into said joint; or, if the strengthening-piece is provided with loops at its ends, I use sharp-pointed tacks, which are passed through said loops into the sole, or in between the insole and the outer sole.
By these means a tip for boots and shoes is obtained which readily adapts itself to the formation of a boot or shoe, and which can be readily secured in position Without the aid of particular tools or knowledge of the art of shoemaking; and, furthermore,` my tips do not injure the appearance of a boot or shoe.
I am aware that metallic tips for boots and shoes have been made, and such are, undoubtedly of great advantage; but they cannot be readily secured in position without calling in the aid of a Shoemaker, and, furthermore, they injure the appearance of the boot or shoe to which they are attached.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boot or shoe tip, of leather or other suitable material, provided with a pocket around its edge, adapted to receive a cord or wire, substantially as and for the purpose described. I
I n testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 30th day of May, 1876.
