This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dolls. v

The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, de endable in use and eficmnt in action, and w 1ch' can through an opening so as to be compressible to give out crying sounds, a lever connected with the movable mouth, a weight connectedwith the movable eyes and resting on said lever, and means associated with said bellows cry sounder and coactable with said lever to movethe latter element for moving the'mouth and eyes simultaneously with the crying operation. The means associated with said bellows cry sounder 12 and coactable with the lever 14 to move the latter element for moving the mouth and eyes simultaneously with the crying operation comprises a rigid strip 29 attached to the front of the bellows cry sounder 12 and extended upwards across the front of the lever 14. A peg 30 projects from the free end of the strip 29 and extends through a slot 31 formed in the lever 14. When the cry sounder 12 is depressed, the strip 29 moves so as to pivot the lever 14 to move the jaw and at the same time raise the weight 15 which pivots the eye ball members 10 to simulate that the doll slightly closes the eyes during the crying.

In the modified form of the device illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, a means has been shown associated with the bellows cry sounder and coactable with the lever connected to the movable mouth to move the latter element for moving the mouth and eyes simultaneously with the crying operation and moving the eyes and mouth several times for each depression of the bellows cry sounder. means comprises a rack 32 attached upon the front of the bellows-cry sounder 12 and extended rearwards, and meshing with a gear 33 supported upon a bracket 34 attached upon the interior of the body 17. The bracket 34 supports a second gear 35 which meshes with the gear 33. Thespindle which supports the gear 35 extends past the bracket and is formed with a square ortion indicated by reference numeral 36. drum 37 is slidably mounted upon the square portion 36.

The drum 37 has one end section which supports a plurality of equally spaced short pins 38. These pins are pivotally mounted at their inner ends upon the drums and normall maintained in radial positions by coaxia springs 39 upon the pivot points. Shoulders 40 are formed on the pins 38 so as to limit movements of the pins in one direction to the radial, and allowing pivoting of the pins on their hinge points in the other direction only. The latter mentioned means comprises a fork 44 slidably mounted upon the inside of the body 17 by engaging a support bracket 45. The end of the slide portion of the fork 44 extends from the support bracket 45 and projects through an opening 46 in the body 17 to the exterior. dicated by reference numeral 47. A block 48 is attached upon the inside of the body 17 and supports a spring 49 provided with pins 50 engageable against the extended end 47 of the fork for holding the fork as required. In Fig. 5 one of the pins is shown holding the fork so that the drum 37 is in the position in which the pin 41 is in line with the lever 14. The end 47 may be manually moved so that the other pin 50 engages it to hold the drum 37 in the position with the pins 38 in line with the jaw lever 14.

When the bellows cry sounder 12 is depressed to cause it to operate, this motion will e transmitted to move the rack 32 and rotate the drum 37. In the condition of the device as shown in Fig. 5, the large pin 41 will act against the lever 14 for smartly moving the lever outwards to cause one large movement of the jaw and a material closing of the eyes, and then drop the jaw lever 14 so that the mouth may close and the eyes open even though the bellows 12 is further depressed. In the position of the drum 37 in which the pins 38 are in line with the jaw lever 14, depression of the bellows 12 causes rotation of the drum 37 so that the fingers 38 move the jaw lever 14 and drop the latter element each time a'pin 38 moves past the jaw lever. This causes the mouth and the eyes to move several times during the compressing of the bellows and one single crying operation. When the bellows is released, the fingers 38 merely idle back past the jaw lever 14.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the sco e of the invention as defined in the appen ed claims.

A doll having movable eyes and mouth, a bellows cry sounder supported in the doll and exposed'through an opening so as to be compressible to give out crying sounds, a lever connected with the movable mouth, a weight connected with the movable eyes and resting on said lever, and means associated with said bellows cry sounder and coactable with said lever to move the latter element for moving the mouthand eyes simultaneously with the crying operation, and moving the eyes and mouth several times for each depression of the bellows cry sounder, comprising a rack attached to the front of the cry sounder and meshing with a gear system connected with a drum supporting a plurality of fingers capable of individually engaging said jaw lever in succession, the fingers on said-drum being arranged in sections of difierent sizes, and a means being provided for holding the drum in adjusted positions so that the difierent sections of fingers may act as desired against the jaw lever.
