simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction.
A further object is to provide for a doll head or the like having eye and mouth.
openings therein a facial change device consisting of rotatable members, each provided with a plurality of variously expressed features thereon, with a weighted means for rotating the rotatable members which may be operated by tipping the doll head whereby the variously expressed features on the rotatable members are successively exposed to view through the eye and mouth openings of the doll head.
Still a further object is to provide a modified construction in which a manually movable member may be manipulated for causing changes in the expression of the doll.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a doll head illustrating one expression on the face 1 sltion illustrated so that the pawl 28 may thereof.
Figure 2 is a similar reduced view illustrating another expression.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line .3-3 of Figure 1 illustrating the facial change mechanism in section.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the mechanism apart from the doll head.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of Figure 4 viewing the mechanism in the direction of the arrow 5 adjacent Figure 4 and Figure 6 is a sectional view similar to a part of Figure 3 illustrating a modified form of construction.
On the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a doll head or the like. Eye openings 12 r and a mouth opening 14 are formed in the head 10.
7 head is tipped back and forward. a
1930. Serial no. 433,450.
My facial change mechanism consists of a pair of frame members 16 adapted to be supported within the doll head 10, as shown in Figure For instance, ears 18 on theends of the frame members 16 may be embedded in the material of the head.
-A pair of shafts 20 and 22 are rotatably carried by the frame members 16.. Eye members 24 are secured to" the shaft'20 in. any desirable manner. f *cc Eyes, as indicate'dby the reference characters (Land 2), are represented on the eye members 24 at spaced circumferential points. As indicatedatc a blank space may be left if desired. 1 r
Secured to the shaft 20 between the frame members 16 is a ratchet wheel 26. For rotating the ratchet wheel 26 I provide a pawl 28 pivoted to a pin 30. "The pin 30 is con-,, nected to a U shaped weight frame 32 The weight frame 32is pivoted at 34 to the framemembers l6. i
Stops 36 and 38 are provided for the weight frame 32 to limit swinging movement thereof. 1 A weight 40 is carried by i the weight frame 32. Normally the weight assumes the position shown in full lines in F igure 3 withlthe weight frame 32 against the stops 36. When the doll istipped back-w.
wardto a horizontal position, however, the we1ght40 will swing to the dotted line poengage another tooth of the ratchet'26 for rotating it another portion of a revolution.
The represented eyes (if and b are arranged on the eye members 241so asto successively appear in the eye openings 12 as the doll An operative connection is provided be-. tween the shaft 20 and the shaft 22. On the drawings, I have illustrated bevel pinions 42 and 44anda gear 46 meshing-with the pinions. A mouth member 48 is secured to the shaft 22 and has various represented mouths-a, b and 0 etc; thereon for showing through themouth opening 14.
It will be obvious that the facial expression of the doll head can be easily changed 'by merely tipping the doll andwith the number ofrepresented eyes and mouths on vN20 f Some changes'maybe made in the'conthe members 24 and 48 shown, a great variepinions associated with said members and ty of expressions can be given to the dolls an angularly arranged gear meshing with face. said pinions.

In Figure 6 I have illustrated a modified construction in which the pawl 28 is pivoted to a'lever50. The lever is pivoted at 52 w and connected by a link 54 with a-pushb'utton 56. A spring 58-is-provided for holding the pawl at one limit of its movement. This form of device may' bemanuallyioperated by pressing the button 56 which is cated in a socket 60 for-medin thehead 10;
Thus it will be seenrthat the device can'be either arranged'for automatic operation by tipping'the doll or manual operation when arranged as shown in Figure 6.
struction and arrangement ofthe parts of mydevice without departing'irom the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is'myiintention' to cover by my claims, any
,g mo'dified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which maybe reasonably included within their scope.
'I'claim as my invention: l. F or use with a doll head having a "plurality of openings therein, a :Eacial V change device comprising movable members,
"eaclrprovided with aplurality of variously "expressed features thereon and discernible through said openings, means to move one of ,35 said members and an operative connection between said last mentioned member and an- "other of said members comprising pinions associated with said members and a gear meshing .with said pinions.
I 2. For use with a doll head having apair O3 from one feature to another, apinion asso- 7 of eye openings and a mouth opening therein, a faci'al change device comprising a pair of'rotata'ble'members for said eye openings and-a member for said mouth opening, each 1 45 of said members-being provided with a plurality of variously expressedfeatures thereon "discerniblethrough said openings and rweight means, operable by tipping said doll head, for rotating said pair of members ciated with said pair of members, a pinion sassociated with said third member and a gear meshing with s'aid pinions for rotating said third member from one feature to an- ,65 other simultaneously with the operation of I v i I saidi'pair of members.
3 For use with a doll head having apluirallty ofopenings therein, a facial change device comprising movable members, each co 'provided with aplurality ofvariously eX- pressed features thereon and discernible V through said openings, means to move one fof said members and an operative connectionibetween said mentioned member an d'an- 1 V 65 other of said members comprising bevel i
