Application led April 9, 1924. Serial No. 705,314.
To (1U lwhom z't may con-cem;
Be it known that I, RAY W. Devlin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.y
This inventionv relates to novelty toys, and contemplates the provision of a member having a character arranged thereon, and representativeof theV head of a person or animal, preferably made in profile, and a flexible elementfterminall'y connected at appropriate `points' sotliat by shaking the member, the riexbleelement will assume different outlines, andby reason of its positon with relation tothe face affords the latter different facial' expressions for the amusement of the user.l
The nat-ure andv advantages of the invention will be better 'understood when the. following detailedl description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination 'and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this applica-tion, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein: Y
The figure in the drawing is a plan view of the toy, showing one position of the flexible element by f ull lines, and other positions by dottedv lines.
Referring to the drawing in detail, l() represents the lbody or base of the toy, which may be constructed from card board or any other suitable material, and if desired mounted in a frame 11, furthermore this member, with or withoutthe frame 11Y` may vary1 in size and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention. The member 10 has drawn or otherwise suitably arranged thereon a character adapted to represent the head of a. person or an animal, preferably a person as herein shown, and in the preferred embodiment of the invention, the head is drawn or made in profile. For the purpose of changing the facial expressions for the amusement of the user, I make use of a flexible element 12 which as illustrated is adapted to be terminally connected at the forehead at apoint directly above the nose as at 13, and also to the neck directly beneath the chin as at 1l] Thile 4this element may bev of any suitable materia-l, it has'been found that a chain of very light material closely woven and somewhat similar to a. watch chain is very useful for the purpose intended. The chain may occupy the position shown by full lines in the drawing, or it may assume any number of different positions to vary the facial expressions of the character, after the member has been shaken or vibrated to put the chain in motion, and some of these different positions are illustrated by dotted lines in the dra-wing. The toy is very simple in construction, and can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost, and it is designed to aii'ord considerable amusement especially to young children who can use the toy in the manner described, as it does not require any thought or skill to manipulate the toy.
fhile itis believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and dcscribed, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: V
A toy of the character described comprising a base member having a figure thereon representing a head in profile, and a flexible element having one end secured to the lower portion of the forehead and the other end secured to the neck of the figure, said flexible element being normally V-shaped, whereby the intermediate portion of the element is permitted to form irregular lines on said base to change the lines of the profile.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
- RAY W. DOVER.
