Invenlor z z lb e 5628 39 A Il omey Patented May 5, 1931 BEATRICE SPIERS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA COMBINED OUTER AND UNDER SHIRT Application filed May 28,
This invention appertains to a combined outer and under shirt and has for one of its important objects the provision of a garment of this character which is open at its front to permit same to be put on or removed in the same manner as a conventional coat shirt.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide acombined ou er and under shirt embodying a construction which will provide warmth, which will be extremely comfortable and which may be produced and marketed at comparatively low cost.
In the accompanying drawings which con stitutes a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of a shirt constructed in accordance with this i11- vention with the front thereof closed,
Figure 2 is a view in elevation showing the sides thrown open in a manner to expose the interior of the garment,
Figure 3 is a detail view in elevation showing the under shirt portion of the garment detached from the outer shirt,
Figure d is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line H of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional View taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 designates the body portion of the outer shirt, 2 are the sleeves, 3 is the neck band and, as best seen in FigureQ of the drawings, 4 designates a yoke depending from an interme diate portion of the neck band 3 into the back of the body portion 1 and terminating in the usual manner in spaced relation to the op posite side edges of said body portion.
The reference numeral 5 designates the un der shirt portion of the garment which is disposed under the body portion 1 of the outer shirt and is provided with a back extension 6 passing upwardly between the arm opening provided by the sleeve 2 adj acent the back of said body portion and has its upper end stitched under the yoke l. The back extension 6 is free of the back portion of the body 1 of the outer shirt with the exception 1930. Serial No. 456,730.
of the upper end thereof which is secured beneath the yoke 4.
The opposite side edges of the under shirt 5 terminates in inwardly spaced relation to the corresponding edges of the outer shirt 1 and are stitched thereto and, as best illustrated in Figure 5, a binding 7 encloses the marginal side edges of both the outer and front shirt and is stitched thereto as at S. The marginal port-ions of the binding 7 are preferably turned under and stitched in the manner also clearly illustrated in Figure 5.
Shoulder straps 9 extend upwardly and inwardly from the opposite marginal side portions of the under shirt 5 and have their upper ends stitched beneath the opposite side portions of the yoke l. The shoulder straps 9 extend over the opening provided by the sleeve 2 of the outer garment.
At its lower end, the under shirt 5 terminates in spaced relation to the lower end of the outer shirt 1 and is free thereof. An inturned hem 10 is provided on the lower end of the under shirt 5. It may be here stated that the only points at which the under shirt is secured to the outer shirt are along the opposite side edges thereof, at the upper end of the back extension 6 and at the upper ends of the shoulder straps 9.
I have described in detail the particular construction illustrated in the accompanying I drawings for the purpose of disclosing an embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A garment of the character described comprising an outer shirt open at its front and lncluding sleeves, a neck band and a yoke depending from the neck band, the sides of the yoke being spaced inwardly from the sides of the shirt, an undershirt disposed on the inner side of the outer shirt and having its side edges stitched throughout their length to the marginal side portions of the outer shirt, the upper end of the undershirt being spaced below the upper end of the outer shirt, an integral back extension extending upwardly from the undershirt between the sleeve openings of the outer shirt and having its free end portion stitched beneath the lower end portion of the yoke, the remaining portion of the extension being free of the outer shirt, and integral shoulder straps extending upwardly and inwardly from the marginal side portions of the undershirt and having their free end portions stitched beneath the side portions of the yoke, the ren'iaining portions of the shoulder straps being free of the outer shirt and extending over the sleeve openings in the'outer shirt.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
BEATRICE SPIERS.
